This just in, some threads can be "off topic" and not be closed while others are allowed to continue until people stop bothering to post in them.
Yeah, there's no point in trying to make sense of it. I also can't condone or condemn any mods here for that. It's like asking the cop "why doesn't everyone else get pulled over for speeding" when he's handing you the ticket...
Being in a position of authority you need to (and get to) pick your battles. I think it would be ridiculous (illogical) if we followed all of the rules to a T (both here on the forums and in society outside).
Technically, I could, according to forum rules, nail a lot of people for spam/worthless posts. But then, I could spend all day doing it and either drive people away from the site and alienate a bunch of folks, which is kind of the system I remember on the official WK board.
Was he right to close it down, or wrong to close it down? Maybe we were getting a lot of reported posts from there. Maybe we weren't (I don't know, and I haven't looked into it, and I really don't care).
To me, it doesn't really matter what happened. If the action falls in line with the site rules, and someone has the authority to act on it, then the fact that it was acted on shouldn't be a surprise. I know it seems counterintuitive in a world where rules are supposed to be applied consistently - but there it is. In life - we have rules. They attempt to guide our behavior. They're not necessarily capable of being followed consistently all the time.
The crazy thing is, it's probably just going to move the conversation elsewhere.

I don't necessarily have an issue with the rules being what they are, or the (in)consistent application of them, but it just feels needless and heavy-handed in some cases...not all, and I'm not referring specifically to any one thing.

I can't argue that. Sometimes it just depends on the type of day someone is having, as to what the response is.
*shrug*

I was very entertained at the conversation between you and Thrumble. Watching two people that I enjoy debating with debate each other while I sit back and spectate was just its own kind of fun.

Agreement with all of this.
As someone in a position of authority in the "real world", I get all of this, but it also puts me in the unique position of not only seeing and understanding it, but critiquing it in a different way.
I wear "SPAM/Advert/Worthless Post" as a badge of honor because it was the explanation given for an infraction. But it didn't even apply. If you're going to pull me over and give me a speeding ticket for running a red light, we're going to start having problems. I understand the cops can't catch every speeder or red light runner, but know the difference.
But everyone's posts are SPAM or advertisements or worthless posts depending on your point of view.
Really, if the forum was the utopia so many people seem to want, then everyone's posts would consist of "I agree with the OP" and isn't THAT, then, just the definition of SPAM/Advert/Worthless Post?
Your last line is perfect, though. That's all that ever really happens.
I would say, however, that I'd like to see "the rules" followed to a "T" everywhere. The only difference is that I don't think it's the job of authority to catch everyone who breaks the rules, I think it's the job of individuals to either police themselves or help authority to do its policing. But society has moved so far away from that, I don't think it's a possibility anymore.
