I did have an all evil D&D game go well for a while. They faced down overly righteous heroes and world destroying villains. They built their evil kingdom, and held off anyone who tried to change their status quo. I think the trick was just keeping them motivated, and using threats directly interfered with them, making their allies helpful, and not just something to murder.
Can't see that working for truly chaotic evil though. Lawful evil sure. Maybe even Neutral evil. Chaotic Evil, well I think Alfred said it best in the Dark Knight, "Some people, they just want to see the world burn."
If you let them kill your dreams, it'll haunt you.
