No, I don't understand why they're called that. Other generations have accomplished just as much, if not more, than that generation. It just didn't involve blowing people to smithereens, so somehow it's not worth as much.
Dude, if you don't dig on them being called the "Greatest Generation", go ahead and take your issues to Tom Brokaw, loads and loads of history professors and a big number number of published historians. They came up with the name. We didn't. Take it to them. They're responsible. No one on this thread is.
Personally, I hate the term Gen X much more. Who do I go yell at to get that one changed?!
And back to the ACTUAL topic of the thread: If you're peeved about the pointless death of Steve Rogers, do what I'm doing. Drop all your Marvel titles and read JSA instead. Now that's a good book that there is.
Steve Rogers is not dead. Steve's running for president in 2008 so he needs some time to get a nice replacement in place for when he becomes president.
I mean, you can't expect a guy to run a country AND play superhero every day!!
Once his term is over, he'll go back to superheroing but will take the name Colonel America much like the Zombie Universe Steve. Thus proving that "Captain" America is truely dead.
I think these stories are more enjoyable if you don't constantly look for a hidden meaning regarding the state of the USA...maybe 'cause i'm Canadian, I dunno, i've got my own opinions on our neighbours to the south, but if you look hard enough, you can find connections and hidden meanings behind everything. I remember readind Lord of the Flies in high school and my teacher going over all the symbolism, and near the end of the book the navy comes and one guy has a gun...she said that was symbolic of power and authority...I went wtf he's in the freakin' navy, i'm pretty sure a lot of them carry guns (especially when going on wierd islands) for you know, protection and whatnot.
Anyways, I originally didn't like Captain America at all, for obvious reasons, but since reading more Avengers and Civil War I started to like him, so I was kinda sad to see him go...but it does set up some interesting stories, so i'd like to see where it goes.
The Messages are not hidden. They are very Apparent. I am 1/2 Canadian and can Understand why Captain America would not mean much to you. I have two Canadian Cousins who love comics and We used to trade them when we would visit. It was fun getting books in French. But neither of the, cared for Cap either. But Captain America is not like other comics. Captain America Wears the Flag. he is the Flag and Is America. And that means something to me. It's okay if few or nobody agrees with me. It's how i feel.

Okay, so then why don't Canadians feel the same way about Guardian?
maybe my newbie colors are about to show here, but with the death of cap, the MIA status of Thor and Hawkeye, and the death of Ant-Man, i can't see any of these new avenger books giving me what i liked from the older ones. I smiled when i saw the big picture of my favorite lineup in Mighty Avengers. But all i want is my heroes back. I'm continually losing faith in that which i once held so dear. I'm collecting Annihilation starting now, and if by the time im done with that (since im hoping Marvel space still holds true), im out, someone said before its gone from gritty to depressing, and thats exactly it. surprise me Marvel, in a good way.

(just throwin' in another monkey wrench... )
I do not know why you would be throwing a monkey wrench at me. I get the feeling that you want me to wave the flag and Bash Canada or something. I am Pro Canada having Family there.
You're asking me to comment on how all the Candian People feel about a Comic Character Few Knew about? Yep, That was some Wrench. It got me right between the eyes. You got me. I never said i knew how the Candian People felt about Guadian taking a dirt nap.
I have No Idea how the Candian Comic book world feels about the death of Guardian and Alpha Flight. I am sure some where sad. It bothered me as Alpha Flight was one of my Favorite super teams. You're comparing Alpha Flight to the Avengers and Guardian to Captain America?
With all due respect I really don't see the point you're trying to make.
I am sorry, I thought for a second that you really wanted to have an Intelligent Adult conversation regarding an Issue I think is Important. But instead your goal is to anger me and have me make a fool out of myself. I am not going to give you that.

Optionally, my goal could have been to lighten the mood of a thread that was going noplace good (and fast), but if you want to believe that I guess I can't stop you...
