I'm trying to narrow the scope of my collection and what I collect, but I'm not sure how best to do it.
Haphazardly.
I tend to buy a common/uncommon/rare set and slowly pick up the super rares I want. My guess is that that's the best way to do it. If I like a set (usually a DC set) I buy a brick or a case, depending on how much the super rares interest me. There are big holes in my collection everywhere, but for the most set just having complete common/uncommon/rare sets of everything with three of every generic lets me build the teams I want. Apparently I'm buying every fast forces pack and a full set of every gravity feed except Street Fighter, too.

I try to get one of everything playable, since I am mostly a player.
For generics, I generally want a few.
Street Fighter and Halo have me on the fence about keeping up with the completist attitude-- I still need two of the SF chases, and I find it hard to pay that much for something I won't play much. I did just sell one, so I guess that cash could account for one, but not both.
Halo is an even bigger problem-- It's nearly a full set, and god help me if it has chases. I figure it will be like Batman Alpha-- it will take me ages to get the last few pieces, because I won't be trying hard or willing to pay much.
Edit: So I end up buying 3 cases of major releases, and selling off my extras aggressively to make back the cash or fund shase purchases. I also but FF packs, and for Gravity Feeds I spilt the Cap and GL ones, bought two SF cases and sold extras, and for GoW I lucked out and got all 10 from singles.
Are you more Marvel or DC? Do you have specific themes you like to play? Just focus on the aspects of the game you like the most. If you're all about thematic fun teams from Marvel, well then focus on those figures.
I think this is the way I wanted to audit my figures. So now it's a matter of figuring out what I want to collect. Tough.
For those following the "ethics of running away" thread yesterday:
Last night, I played a bye round against one of the more stratgic players. He had brought a SHIELD team (I played) and a Police team (he played). 300 points, nobody over 60 points.
Every time one of us would reposition, the other would say "You're turtling! You're running away!" It was fun. It was also fun because, as it usually it with him, it was a thoughtful and strategic match. Also, I think the average attack role was a 5 (for both of us).
