Since they invented the Feat Cards and players decided it was more important to use them to win the game than to use the game to simulate comic book battles.
It's been there since day 1. Joker teams up with batman. Firelord teams up with con artists. People have been playing dial-clix since the dial was invented.

You know what would've been an amazing idea? Have a dial that you can assign to your team if you played a name themed team similar to the asset dial. Like a resource dial that can be given to your entire team of individuals instead of having to put them on a giant base. Shoot, the base of the "team dial" could still even have designs or sculpts on them for display. This dial could give certain characters special abilities if they were ADJACENT to each other. Like Robin using flight when adjacent to Starfire, instead of an entire GIANT base getting it. This still shows synergy and individual talent. It also allows for a LOT more strategy in your placement and would feel more like you're running an actual team instead of a colossal.
Makes more sense to me, and you could even use your old Clix instead of having to get a bunch of switchclix.
I don't want to really toot my own horn here (even though I'm quoting myself) but I think I'm onto something. Hear me out:
I play a 500 point game. I make a themed team. Let's say Teen Titans. I bring four characters: Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Cyborg. Together when you total up their points they're shy of 500, so I add my hypothetical "team dial" for the Teen Titans to them for X amount of points. This replaces resources and special objects.
Now on this card it has a criteria for assigning it (theme team keyword, characters, etc.) It also has a list of leaders. One of these of course would be Robin. Now this team dial means Robin can be selected as a leader, granting him leadership and probability control (or you can nix the leader prob and still do themed team prob, similar to actual team bases).
My team dial is very similar to the asset dial in that it has character pairings on it. These range from two characters up to four characters. On the card it states what the characters can do when the team dial is showing their pairings. Sometimes they have to be adjacent for a power to work (Colossus and Wolverine doing a fastball special) and sometimes they don't (placing Kid Flash next to a friendly as a free action just because he's that fast).
Now when do you turn the dial? When your leader successfully makes a leadership roll, you may turn it to any "pairing" you want. Alternately, the leader can be given a power action at the beginning or end of your turn to turn the dial to whatever pairing you want. When the leader is KOd, you can give a friendly character on your team a power action to roll a d6 and turn the dial accordingly.
Makes sense? Better than what we got? I think so. Come hire me Wizkids.
I am not sure why if you don't like something you are a "hater". I agree if you don't like them, don't use them.
Saying you personally don't like / won't use team bases isn't hating, it's stating a personal opinion. Having concerns about their balance isn't hating, it's a smart approach in any game, but especially considering some of the meta-cheese we've gotten recently (while they don't COMPLETELY break the game, there are certainly offenders that are very powerful for their cost).
Saying team bases are: bad for the game, too complicated, somehow NOT what many players have been asking for, etc., ESPECIALLY if you refurse to try to understand...THAT'S hating. Hyberbole or outright lies doesn't really matter, because you've decided based on a snap judgement, critical reading comprehension failure, laziness, or mean spirit to try and alienate everyone to something. And as this mechanic is confirmed for the X-set, I don't really see how you can 'hope it dies out' before then. Critical thinking failure, much? (This last comment is obviously aimed at the poster who made it, not the poster I quoted. Figured I'd throw in the disclaimer since you guys DON'T READ. Oh wait, then I guess this won't help after all...)
The place of team dials is clearly to take the TEAMWORK part of team-building to a new level, and give SPECIFIC theme teams both a new tool and a core to build around, and whole new kind of tentpole in large point games that many large teams simply don't have. Why should every theme team deserve a team dial? More importantly, why should EVERY member who has EVER been a part of a team be considered eligible? Even ignoring the production and design issues, how is making team dials able to include ANY figure with the keyword helpful to the mechanic? Team Symbols and Keywords are a broad enough mechanic that they can still grant special abilities and Theme Team PC even to disparate teams. Just because a team HAPPENED (regardless of how popular) doesn't really mean a team dial is right for them. Even this does not exclude a possible middle ground in the future as suggested by FlavorableDeez with resource dials only usable by certain theme teams despite his insane ideas that having team dial as an options to build around somehow detracts from a team (especially considering each individual member can be played as a distinct figure even in the SAME RELEASE).
Seriously, what IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? When someone tells you they're selling another type of lottery ticket that you, personally, are not interested in, you go complain to everyone you know and write a complaint letter to the company that makes it? Oh wait, there I go engaging in hyperbole just because someone disagreed with me... You all need mental help! Oh damn, there's the outright lies and spite. Well, shoot, it's almost like it's possible to have a discussion about the pros, cons, and place team dials have in and for the game without resorting to nonsense. You know, have reasonable behavior and reasoned arguemnts while still coming to different conlucsions about whether we like or dislike the thing. NO, IT IS TOO RIDICULOUS, I REFUSE TO BELIVE IT!
While I think the team bases would make great display pieces, I don't see myself ever playing one. All the special rules for new mechanics that come with each new set is becoming quite tedious. It's no wonder why all the 8-10 year olds that try to get into clix at my venue stop showing up after a couple weeks. Not only do players need to know the core rules (which is a small book), but now we need familiarize ourselves with pamphlets of new rules every couple of months.
Here's the thing guys, don't like it don't buy it that simple, in my venue lots of people bought vehicle boosters but not a one has been played at all, I own a few and never played them either, I also was confused by the enormity of that play card but again it comes down to choice.
Don't like it don't buy it. I like it but not going to buy it because I have a certain play style. I might get them to display them like I do my vehicles.
Would love a hall of justice and a xavier institute.
1st thing: too big I already don't have room for vehicles let alone colossals
2nd: If it requires more than just a basic front and back card then there is way too much going on
3rd: this ruins the whole point of "build your own team"
Finally: this ruins bricks when I have to get 1 of these instead of 4 more packs
Wtf? Could this thing be more complicated? Im going to have to sit down and seriously read these rules over and over just to get an idea of whats going on. Consider me unimpressed. Will just be another mechanic thats either way OP or underpowered due to being new.
I completly agree with you.
This one is a real brain-srambler.
It seems a very OP games mechanic since it allows you to move all your team, ignoring all terrains effects with one move action.
What do you think?
When it comes to team bases, vehicles, or any other game element that adds a ton of new rules the "don't like it, don't buy it argument" isn't really relevant in my opinion. To me the biggest issue with the aforementioned game mechanics isn't "I don't like it, I'm not buying it" but more of an inconvenience issue.
These new rules for new game elements means that not only does the person using the new mechanic need to know the rules, but myself as well (whether I choose to buy/play it or not). I've played and watched games with vehicles that are severely slowed down because either one or both players don't understand the rules. I personally don't enjoy games where I need to stop every few minutes to read a rules pamphlet or explain why something is or is not allowed.
So, whether I buy a team base or not, the release of them is affecting my gaming experience in a potentially negative way.
The dial isn't any more complicated to use than any existing resource or colossal with special rules. I like having the option to field a single base/dial that features powers that a collective of individual figures don't have.
That being said, team dials make more sense to use in higher point games-- along with other individual figures-- against a single, large threat (Galactus, Trigon, etc.). Unless I need the "Team Titans" to help take down Trigon, I'll use each Titan member individually.
...this ruins the whole point of "build your own team"...
HOW, exactly? The only thing worse than that people keep saying this is that they actually MEAN it. Other Titans still exist. You can still play them with all the figures that can join the team dial separately, and there ARE advantages to doing so. You can even play said other titans WITH the team dial on the same team. So ultimatum time: either explain in detail how this ruins team building, OR DON'T POST THIS BULL####.

In contrast to the prior quote, THIS is valid. Can players still buy enough boosters to make a traditional brick? Yes, but not AS a brick, which undermines the 'don't want it, don't buy it' arguement (as if there weren't enough things going against it already...). I think WizKids would have been better served by marketing traditional bricks with these releases in ADDITION to Super Booster bricks.
