As for if it's a relic when it comes down, look at the following line, noting the bold:
"If the friendly character does not place the relic on its card this turn, then for the remainder of the game, it is a relic as described on its card."
From the text, it is a relic even as it comes down.
Oops....I meant to ask about the forge.
Got confused there, sorry.
What I'm wondering, is when u replace the forge with a new object, does it go on the characters card, or do u have to attempt to pick up the new item?
I know I should've quoted the card, it's just that I can't see the point of swapping the forge with something else when u could just use that something else in the first place...

Versatility. Maybe sometimes you need Doc Ock's arms, sometimes you need a hammer, sometimes you need Mr. Freeze's gun, etc. Not that I think that's really worth it since usually you know what you need and could start with it (and resources are better anyway), but as the number of relics grows...
But dang..
Telekinesis tent pole out 5+ squares.
Give another fig a power action to bring down Skadi's.
Free action to pick it up with tent pole, using Splitlip.
Pole can charge and exploit first turn, for most likely 12+ attack.. Throw in a heavy object..
Wow, fatal.
Shoot.. GR, H4H to Exploit again.. Good Game.
Edit: FI Colossus, 2nd charge to grab another object.. 12 dmg possible first turn. (Plus he runs through everything.)

I also look at the hammers on the book as resources. they are played using the resource side of their card, not the relic side. that is unless you don't pick them up the round they come in. I believe that the fellowship of the rings "relics" lend credence to this, as they do not have a resource side of the card, just relic.

just my thought process.
Except on the Resource side of the card it still says Relic.
And that the opponent would have to be within 13 squares of your starting area (8 for TK + 5 for charge).
Regardless, he's got a point that it can be a surprise when you're not expecting a figure to land a hit, then they pick up a hammer with a free quake and then smack for +2 AV and maybe another power.

Now I'm wondering the same thing, too! So do you have to roll a 3-6, then the forge can change into another relic that you have to pick up (with another power action) AGAIN or is it automatically picked up because you got the forge?
-Heroclix is not a game of logic, it's a game of strategy .... after all, when's the last time that you saw a giant (using a stealth ability) that was hiding behind a swingset... and nobody could SEE him????
It reads to me as if you roll for the Forge and if successful you have the option of placing it on the character's card and getting your choice of stat buff or exchanging it for another relic which you would then need to try to pick up again.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
