Originally posted by Warflail This is the LAST thing the game needs. People likely to get pissed off about an invisible unit are the sort that are also likely to buy whole cases of product. And are also the sort that are likely to write Clickytech off completely.
Pissed off players = former players.
Former players = less profit.
Less profit = dead game line.
Also keep in mind that former players not only hurt sales via their own lack of purchasing... but they also hurt sales via negative word of mouth advertising. And as I said before, the sort that are going to get pissed off about that sort of thing are the type that care. And hence are the type that will generate LOTS of negative word-of-mouth.
I've never understood the whole "Why dont you just quit if you dont like it" arguement. Bad for all parties involved.
So, since I like the Raptor, I must not buy cases? It does work the other way: people put off by the howling and complaining of CBT fanatics who treat old FASA books as holy writ don't buy cases either.
I'm more than willing to bet that, previous to set retirement, previous to AoD, previous to clear mechs, way back in, say, the DFA days, WizKids had a spreadsheet showing that the way things were wasn't going to succeed. They might coast for a while, but the thing was bound to crash. And that's when they started trying to move past the known audience. Either they changed and suceeded, or they changed and died quick or they did nothing and died slow. They chose change.
Now, it may well be that they change and die fast, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that they foresaw a slow, lingering death in the future if they relied on the type of people willing to quit a game over violation of their holy writ.

And I'd promptly rebase them, and use them as an army of Giant Space Hamsters for DDM. Spelljammer will not be forgotten! :p

Never said you didnt. Dont put words in my mouth.
Look, I'm not even necessarily saying the unit bothers me. But it does bother me that they would deliberately do something so inflamatory when the situation is already very sensitive, insofar as the game's future.

Again, I don't doubt that they knew precisely what the reaction to this would be; the article intimated as much. To my mind, this means there's a reason. I'm not about to declare that WizKids decided to do this without a reason, and a lot of other people are.
I think people are making too much out of this. Stealth mechs exist so we get a gimmicky stealth mech no real need to scream. I could list hundreds of problems that CBT players should be screaming bloody murder about other then this. This is a 1 on a scale of 1-10 on serious violations of the Battletech Universe.

Highdancer has this nailed - as has been stated by protagonists in this and other threads related to the topic at hand, Kevin quite openly states that he knows -
Quote
Taken from Kevin Goddard's Article on the XBOX mech "I pitched [Kelly] the idea. "Have you lived a full life? Because the hardcore players will want your head after this," she asked. Yes, indeed, I had though this over long and hard. Would the players overlook a slight possible continuity breach for a really cool game piece?"
- and as such, you have to arrive at the conclusion that either Kevin has no love for his job, or that the decision was deemed to be good for the longevity of the game.
Since Kevin appears, to all intents and purposes, to be a sane, rational human being who DOES care about the game and the fanbase, you have to assume that this was a calculated move to boost attention.
And it is pretty obvious he knew how some would react. But you can't please all of the people all of the time. As Berserk_Fury states, there are hundreds of other things CBT players (of which I was one for 12 years) could be moaning about. This really is very insignificant on the scale of things.
This is a cool idea to draw attention and boost sales from a different area. I say good on them! ;)
Now thats a exposing idea, transparent like lens on a telescope looking through a window..........
In to the night sky
If I could think of anything better to do with it I wouldn't be here annoying you....
No paint, did you make that out of ICE, it sucks, It reminds me of the clear plastic girly stuff, I see everywhere. When was the last time you saw a drag queen rushing in to battle with a heavy machine gun? How about several shades of camaflouge. Like winter, desert, forest and urban?
I like the little Kelly quote to. She just has no idea does she? The video games have never been considered as true to the story line going way back into the late 80's so trying to shoe horn them in now just to sell a bastardized version of BT is just about heretical.
:) I guess I'm just a Heretic since I read/own pretty much all of the old CBT fiction/books/TRO's, and for some unknown reason I still like this Mech, and the idea of using clear plastic to represent "stealth" technology. Or "cloaking devices", but then we'd run afoul of the "Star Trek" people using their code words :) Whatever, I like the Mech, neat idea and I look forward to getting one to sit on my computer at work, heck if it is vaguely playable, I'll even get to play it at the nice friendly games we have out here in the middle of nowhere...
Heck, I'm not worried about invisible 'mechs. I trust WK will create a new special ranged ability called "paint ball ammo.", which works a bit like a homing beacon and renders all invisible units much easier to hit, especially after a 2nd coat.
hey, what happened to Cloak and Dagger? Anyone actually read and/or know about the first BT novel?
I thought so. It wasn't reprinted like the Warrior trilogy was, specifically because certain elements of the novel did not fit with modern CBT. It was effectively forgotten by most, if not all.
To those of you who say "it's just a game"
Stop. Just because it is a game, doesn't mean that some of us cannot take the game seriously.
...anyway. I just hope this never happens again, and it will fade away. The BT video games tend to mess with continuality (I'm still trying to get over what they did to the vulture for no reason) and what they do ISN'T always canon. Case-in-point : elements of the Davion guard were actually sent to Tranquil, not ELH (MW3)
I think this mech will be overly dominant if it has even a 10" range and around an 8+ speed.
In a game that looks to be dominated by range, a potential 25 against ranged is just about the biggest advantage out there.
Let us hope this mech is not overpowered
