I had 3 and all were necros. I liked darq the corrupt, order of vladd, and order of uhlrik. I even use them consistently in 2.0 games. Surge with 13att 5 damage for the win! Many under estimated them because they were older ifs. But their dials were deep and they had great abilities
My favorite 1.0 unique is the Chaos Mage and I used him in almost every 1.0 game I played. I just loved how for only 45 points he packed so many diffrent abilities and when you mastered his dial and added a shaman or 2 he became a pretty powerful peice.
My favorite 2.0 Unique is Khan Rava and I don't think I even need to explain why. lol
1.0 wise, I'd also like to throw up the Temple Lord for nomination. at 67pts, that much forced march, command, and that good of offense is criminal. I used him to great effect getting groups of Temple Blademasters to where they needed to be.
2.0 wise, I loved to use Vextha. Talk about the "oh ####" moment on an opponent's face when they see you flinging that fully tooled-up jolly rancher their way. Point wise though, it was tough to get her into smaller games.
1.0: Raydan Marz and Emerald Glade Mystery
EMG is very cheap, mobile, awesomely defensive, and most of all has an amazing sculpt.
I would love to collect them if I had the money.
Raydan Marz is the quintessential everyman who rises to great heights to fulfill his dream. I also greatly enjoy his execution style dial, just waiting to cleanup the mobs your tank weakens.
2.0: Raydan Marz and the Dark Riders
The 2.0 sculpt of Raydan is simply perfect. I had to grab one and put it on a dungeons dial.
The Dark Riders are so drenched in theme they effortlessly create an inherently enjoyable, difficult, and strategic boss encounter.
I'm a Solonavi fan so, of course, my favorite to play was Veratrix. As much as everyone complained about how good he is, he does take a little bit of finesse to really dominate. Although I think Kastali's sculpt can make a great case for best in faction.
As a DHC member, I really like Chroma. Just an all around really solid fighter.
I also really liked to play General Volkare. For the points, that guy is a powerhouse.
I think that the thing about Varatrix was he represented a kind of threat that not everyone had an answer to.
Someone could reasonably build an army without any flying units, but have some nice ranged units thinking, "I can just shoot anything that's in the air" (These were the early days of 2.0)
Then along comes Varatrix at soaring level, COMPLETELY untouchable to this and many other armies. Even though he can't hold an objective while flying, he can certainly kill everyone at his leisure. And he will have some kind of back up, especially in bigger games for this kind of grunt work.
He made you come up and fight him, and when you did you found his Melee was even stronger than his very solid ranged attacks, counterattacking and ignoring your defense abilities in either situation.
Other big units could fly and equip a Galeshi Sunsword or Fireshield, but Varatrix was all of this and more in one simple unit.
Facing him could be a nightmare scenario for the unprepared.
Varatrix with Gate Shield and Cloak of the Dervish was one of my favorites for bigger games. Then I'd usually throw in a spellcaster with that one spell that gave him charge, and surround him with a couple of tough Souldrinkers. There are some things money can buy, for everything else, there's driving your opponent insane with ghostform and dodge.
EDIT: I wouldn't say Trixie was a lazy option. As others have mentioned, auto-damage armies can slaughter him. A well equipped rider can also tear him apart. I'd say Varatrix is a solid option that will reward opponents who put thought into their armies, and will punish those who scrap them together without much thought. Playing Varatrix well also takes some talent. Just throwing him at another army is asking from trouble.
I figured I'd throw in another candidate as well. Valkyrie Tazia. She's a dynamite ranged attacker!
While I do think Trix required talent to play, I do have to agree he was kind of a lazy choice when it was just 2.0. Oh look Trix and mage stone shield..... Again. He was pretty much the go to fig for a lot of people.
Maybe it's my old age, or my <3 for the Orc Raiders faction, or maybe it's because I'm 100% 1.0 player. But man, the Chaos Mage was always awesome. But for me I <3'd using my Half-Troll Behemoth (line him up with some ** & *** Half-Troll Hackers) and my Orc Captain. And that was a scary, scary battalion.
Haha I remember the days of my Orcs battling my friend's Black Powder Rebels War Chariot (that hog at the front of it was so back breakingly strong xD). Good times, great memories haha.
