Magic has kept players for years with only 5 teams...
Yes, but Magic is boring... (forgive the editorialization)
And really, for mechanics, I'll give you Color = Team, but for flavor, it doesn't. You can throw a bunch of different stuff into one "color". You can have a bunch of goblins one set, then some minotaurs, then lightning people, then asian blood-demons, etc. etc..
Spider-Friends however, will always just be Spiderman and a few of his friends. Important to keep a constant factor in the game? Most definitely. But doing a set with the same teams as the previous set gives you little to no room for variation of flavor, unlike with Magic's much more loosely defined "Colors".
I liked Marvel Team-Up.
I loved Marvel Team-Up.
I don't want the next 3 Marvel Sets to be exactly the same as Marvel Team-Up.
As a sidenote, I find it odd that on one thread I'm arguing against people who want to add as many off-property and off-theme (non-comic, non-superhero) teams to the game as possible in order to attract new players through properties, and on another thread I'm arguing against people who don't want the game to print anymore new teams at all for the sake of ensuring that a particular handful of iconic-comic teams remains as competitive as possible.
Colors and teams are not equivalent. I would say creature themes (Knights, Slivers, etc) in Magic are more similar to teams than colors. I don't play Magic any more, but I occassionally search through new sets to see if there are any Green "Bears" to acquire.
Also, I don't want to see teams limited in Vs. I can see the need to have a core set of teams that reappear frequently, but that number of teams is larger than 5 (I think it is around 15) with all of those teams getting printed in a 2 year time frame. That still leaves room for 4 - 8 additional teams (often villain teams not included among the 15 main teams) seeing significant coverage in a 2-year period.
For DC (I am not much of a Marvel fan, so I will leave that list to someone else), those teams would be (IMO):
JLA
JSA
Teen Titans
Gotham Knights
Team Superman
Green Lantern
Speed Force
Villains United
Arkham Inmates
Rogues
Revenge Squad
Emerald Enemies
Darkseid
New Gods
Legion of Super-heroes
Anyway, I think we are thinking of the same thing regarding core sets. I really believe some form of reprinting (as I also said on page 3) will help improve the secondary market. Stores will be happy that older stock moves, and this will encourage them to find new singles to replace them.
And the last thing I will say about 1st edition cards, is notice how no one does it anymore. The lack of 1st edition of anything now is proof enough.
I have no problems with new teams being made, just not nearly 20 per year, which it was at one point.
