MC FTW! I was just quoting an above post at the time. You get repped though for quoting me. Is that a good reason for repping someone? No. What are you gonna do, call the cops? "OFFICER! THIS MANIAC COOLEXPLOSION, right over here officer, on Vsrealms, he's repping people just because HE CAN! There's gotta be something illegal going on here!"
"You sir, need some serious help, I'm taking you to headquarters, partly because I'm bored and partly because you're insane."
If you mean, something you do on the weekends, then yes, paying out money for that is "a little funny".
However, it seems like you are comparing playing football in the backyard with your friends to the NFL.
Now THAT sounds funny.
However, did they try to make football popular by STARTING with the NFL?
Or did they actually start with football being a sport that was NOT played for money and it eventually "went pro".
Trying to START with a pro game and then hope it trickles down to casual play is putting the cart before the horse.
You are comparing Vs. pros to sports pros. The difference is that the people paying the sports pros make enough money to be able to do it. And, that there are TONS of people competiting to make the big money. Oh, and that the actual sport was built up a LOT before it gained a professional section. And even then, making a living off it took a long time.

Yes, this may be true, however, the point is that VS has already done this. They were confident they had enough money and would drum up enough interest to justify their spending. For a while, they were right.
However, in combination with a bunch of garbage sets, as well as WoW coming up, which has also had pretty much the same premise as VS had, except now they know not to spend too much money, it meant that money had to come from somewhere.
How about a better analogy:
The NFL already exists at this point. This can be assumed, because other card games, such as Magic and Yugioh have come out, establishing at least the premise of how card game tournaments should be run.
Now VS follows this concept and for a while, people are happy.
Except now, it's arena football.
Sure, its professional to some extent, but it is simply not the same. Sure, they may get paid, but that may not even matter because the height what can be considered a more professional game is suddenly arena football. The game, for the most part, is still the same, so nothing changed in that perspective, yet the game is still infinitely worse.
Should of they started slower rather than faster. Yes. Did they? No.
So in effect, what your saying doesn't even matter at this point in time. True, it is better to try and save the game then drive it into the ground in a blaze of glory. I simply disagree with how they carried it out.
In terms of my post to owenstar, I took it as he was saying these people didn't deserve money for playing a card game, which to me made me think that owenstar could not tell the difference between what it meant to be a casual and competitive gamer.
Who deserves money? People who play in their back yard or people who try to do their best and test for months at a time and happen to win over hundreds of their peers.
And yes WalterKovacs, there are many more people who play football so yes, it is harder to get into the NFL than to win at a card game. I do not see how this is relevant, except maybe you are inferring that I was trying to say that they deserve an obscene amount of money amount of money, perhaps in the millions, for every single player, so that they continue playing. This not what I am trying to say. What I am trying to say is that these people, who are some of the nicer people in most every other card game I have played in, play professionally and don’t treat players with less skill like garbage and laugh at them for making a mistake. They, for the most part, help the players out and as a result, helping improve the health of the player base, because people would know that if they make it to the higher levels of play, they don't have to play against jerks.
So let me clear things up again:
Playing football with your friends (Anyone can play, doesn’t matter whether you win or lose. Ex. Hobby League)
Vs.
The NFL (Only the best play, how much you win generally determines how much you make and how you progress later on in the season. Ex. PCQ and PCs)
And after a while... if the NFL never comes back... most people will give up backyard football for soccer or whatever sport is being televised and commercialized.

Why do so many people try to play Hold 'Em now?
because they watched the same tournament over and over and over and over again and then thought they woudl be cool and try to play cards themselves.
leading to people who talked up there game a ton and making excuses for staying in hands that look bad
"what how could i NOT think of staying in i had a 4 and 6 off suit, with not ajacent numbers face up"
the whole poker craze was lame.......and at the time took away valudable time that should have been CCG playing
