You should probably start with the 2005 reboot with Eccleston and go on from there.

Or, you could always start with the second Season, David Tennant's first. That's where I started and it hooked me. I did like the character of Rose Tyler so much, I had to start season one last week.

Did anybody read Star Wars: Empire or Star Wars: Legacy series? Is it worth picking up?

I read some of Legacy when it first came out. Not bad but I had too many books at that point and ended up dropping it.

I don't think not watching Dr. Who is reason to hand in your nerd card. Now not watching Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, I have personally revoked a few cards for those offenses.

Well, I dodged a bullet with Star Wars, just watching the trilogy last week, but I still haven't watched LOtR.

I won't revoke it, but you're on thin ice.....and FYI, I did revoke one from a guy for that offense and he writes his own Linux systems and speaks Japanese.

I've read the books, that counts for something.
