So I got the game for Xbox, got the code, but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know If I'm supposed to use the "D Pad" to enter it in? Or do I use a joystick. And on what screen do you enter this infamous Silver Surfer code.
Game so far is great, I've un-locked a few costumes, but does anyone know exactly what you have to do to get a costume un-locked. So far it seems you just beat up guys and after a certain amount you get a new costume.
Cross-posted from the Fantasy Heroclix League, so sorry, Turtle, for subjecting you to this twice:
Yes, you can attack and use powers while flying. In fact, it was the only way we managed to beat this big dragon thing (don't remember the character's name; maybe Turtle remembers?), as it wiped out all of our New Avengers team except for Jessica Drew.
Anyhow, it's pretty much a sequel to X-Men Legends 2 in terms of gameplay, but MUCH broader in scope. Instead of being almost exclusively mutant-heavy, the team selection crosses across a lot of the Marvel U, including the Fantastic Four, Elektra, Spider-Man and Woman, Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel (Warbird), Deadpool, Storm, Iceman, and Wolverine unlocked off the bat. I may be missing a couple of characters. Haven't unlocked anybody other than Silver Surfer, who came with the Gamestop purchase.
There are a few notable gameplay changes besides the ability to use powers while flying. They've replaced the "potion" system with something where you get to collect health and energy orbs after defeating an enemy (or in the boss's cases, just knocking them down to a certain point). It makes the game more challenging, as you don't have emergency health boosts at your beck and call. Depending on how you felt about the gameplay in XL2, this may or may not irk you. XL2 was actually pretty easy, and I rarely died, so the added challenge can be seen as adding some fun to the game. But then...the possibility of death? Not so fun either. I'd call this change a wash.
They've also simplified the leveling system. Gone are the whole "where should I put my attributes into?" questions about strength, focus, striking, speed, etc. That's done for you. While RPG addicts may decry this change, as it prevents them from doing wacky things like speccing Johnny Storm into a tank, this is actually an improvement, in my eyes, because the game's console interface prevented people from doing this kind of administrative work at the same time, so co-op games had a lot of down time for people, especially with more players.
Also, as feluwelt pointed out, Cap is indeed a beast. I came into the game more excited about playing Thor or Iron Man (remembering XL2's overpowered goodness), but Cap won me over with his ability to control the whole field with that shield-slinging ability. It takes a little practice, but once you remember to hold down the "X" button (for PS2), then you can use the analog stick to cause the shield to veer any direction you like, and subsequently run over your targets. Once you've knocked down 3 Ultron robots repeatedly with the same shield throw, with the last runover causing them to explode, you'll be sold on the ability.
That, in tandem with the grapple and smack base ability (which is overpowered, as once you grab a minion and start punching, he has to stand there and take it), is enough to make Cap nigh-unstoppable. I haven't really played enough of the other characters to come up with more than spot impressions (like the "fat" jokes we make about Carol Danvers due to her walk/run animation consisting of her hovergliding over the floor: "This is why your thighs are so big, Carol! Just use your legs already!"), but Ms. Marvel is otherwise pretty satisfying to play, with a "smooth" feeling that's probably accentuated by aforementioned animation, and melee attacks that feel both quick and powerful.
Still looking forward to seeing what else we can unlock, but the system for unlocking costumes has changed from XL2 as well. Haven't figured out what it is, but it's not simply "go from Act 2 to 3 and unlock everybody's costumes", but seems to be based on gameplay. Since I've been playing Cap a lot, I've already unlocked his 4 outfits: Ultimate, 616, USAgent, and WWII. And as has been pointed out before, you can customize attributes (which vary by outfit) by using the credits you find to buy upgrades.
However, in another improvement from XL2, favoring one group of characters doesn't seem to penalize you by causing neglected characters to level less quickly. So you can play as the New Avengers all you like: once you decide to switch to the plain Avengers, Thor will have kept up with you and can carry his own weight. There's a new build-a-team feature that I haven't yet touched, but I'm guessing it involves creating your own theme teams from the character stable, and assigning various bonuses to them. Should be good for encouraging players to stay away from the pit crew cheese.
Sorry, wrong genre.
Couple of nitpicks on the voice acting. Although I'm getting used to hearing Wolverine being played by the Cowboy Bebop dude, I'm not too sold on the voice acting for Cap and Thor. Say what you will about Civil War, I like the part where Captain America buys the pilot a hamburger after he commandeers the jet. That's a cool cat. However, the direction for this Cap seems to have been, "Try to sound like a narrator for one of those 1950s 'educational' films that the Simpsons and MST3K always mocked." My beef with the Thor voice (or more accurately, the writing for its voice) has to do with the disconnect between seeing him in his less formal Ultimates garb, while hearing him spout "son of Odin" this and "Asgard" that in a very melodramatic voice. It's nitpicky, and it's not so much of an issue once you unlock the 616 costume. On the bright side, the game has lost that annoying voice that used to spout out "COMBO!" all the damn time.
The setting is, as with the previous games, intentionally vague. You've got 616 elements merging with Ultimate elements, as you can tell with the opening cut scene that shows Thor and Cap in Ultimate gear, taking orders from 616 Nick Fury. It doesn't bother me, especially with the costume choices you get, but if you're really into keeping with canon, you'll be making sure that your costume choices remain consistent no matter which team you field. Not that I would encourage, much less engage in, such nerdiness.
Much love to the makers of Ultimate Alliance. Tons of characters that you would never get a chance to play with elsewhere, and the characters that you have played with? They're probably more fun to play here than in a game vehicle specifically developed to showcase them. The game clearly shows off a knowledge and love of the Marvel universe, and it's fun in both single and the too often neglected co-op mode.
