Do you think you could handle a face-full of fear gas without S@#$ing yourself ?
Here's the key. Fear gas. Scare Crow isn't scary because of his knowledge of psychology. He's scary because he drugs you with a fear toxin. Even Jimmy Olsne can be scary if he has fear toxin. Take away his toys, and Jonathan Crane is probably the least scary of Batman's entire rogues gallery.
Yoda of Borg, we are: Futile, resistance is. Assimilate you, we will.

Except Scarecrow does practice creating fear without his gas. Check out the New Years Evil special he had for an example of him trying to drive someone mad with fear. IIRC, it was in that issue he drove a Archam prison guard to commit suicide using just his words. He's scary, with or without his gas.

But he invented the gas and did so with his knowledge of brain-chemistry. Take away any super-villians `powers' and they're not scary anymore; but as Id say Crane's knowledge of chemistry and phychology counts as his power and it makes alot no more sence to take away someones knowledge when your discussing their merit as a threat than to discount whatever other ability they have.
I mean if someone said, "Cyborg Superman isn't scary if you take away his cybornetics and super-strenght and durability and other powers (etc); then he's just a disabled dude with onyl half a face that kinda looks like Clark Kent" you'd wonder what kind of crazy argument they were trying to make.
And anyways, when Crane really wants to nail someone he doesn't just douse someone with Gas, he analysis them first and sets up the situation that'll capitalise on the fear they already have that the Gas intensifies; so, if you're afraid of, I dunno, doing your incone tax, he'll arange for someone from the IRS to call and spout the gas from your phone-line just as you're already starting to freak out about where you put your receipts.
And that kind of `what'll it take to really put the fear on this planet; without killing them' (since, y'know, Sinistro actually wants to control the universe, and there's not much point ruling an un-populated planet) is the kind of skill set thats useful to an organisation.
Further more, Green Power rings have been shown to be able to anylise and reproduce chemical structures and also read the thoughts of their wielders. Crane could actually feed his own knowledge of chemistry through a Sinistro ring and generate yellow energy that mimics the gas! He could even use it to anylise the brain-chemistry of different alien foes and tailor the weopan he produces to suit. He could them inform fellow Corps members of the specific weaknesses of enemies.
I thinkt he Corps war as it's been thus far would have gone much better in Sinistro's favour if he had have used more psycholgy. Its one thing to generate fear by doing scary stuff (killing) but taking away the willpower of the people of the universe (and therefor the power source) of your main rivals (GLs) is a more complicated task than just being threghtening.
That said; I didn't want Scarcrow to get the ring! I think it was awesome that one was going to him; but it would have been super amazing if he had've rejected the ring; which I think he would have in character. Crane doesn't want to control the universe, or anything, he just wants to experiment on people. And he hates being subject to higher athorites (like the board at his old university or whathaveyou) and would'nt stand just being a lackey of Sinistro's.

I agree with those who said that Scarecrow would have rocked as a Sinestro Corps member. Who understands the psychology of fear better than him? I was very bummed when Jon and Hal intercepted the ring before he could take it.
Anyone else think that our scarred Guardian got "corrupted" in a mental/emotional sense as well, judging by the little Black Hand symbols in her eyes?
DUN DUN DUN!
(I also like that the undead-slaying GL is named "Ash". Hehehe.)
I think so. i'll bet she's the one that initiates the Blackest Night on everyone. anyone got any ideas to see which dead DC character gets a black ring?
"Ring...Sling!" - Green Lantern, Justice League of America #3
I think that when Teth Adam find out that Black Rings are raising the dead, he's going to seek out one for Isis. When it can't bring her back (because she isn't dead, not that he knows) he'll erupt, and draw a red ring to himself.
I want him to get his power back eventually, but I can wait a year or two.

I think Kal-L needs a ring, really. Hehehe.

Whatever qualifications Scarecrow may have, you have to keep in mind that the ring seeks out the most fearful entities in an entire sector of space.
And guess what? Scarecrow doesn't even qualify as one of the scariest people on earth.
Joker beats him out by about a million times. Johnny Sorrow. Vandal Savage. Heck - Amanda Waller. All are ultimately better members of the Sinestro Corps than Scarecrow. I just sighed and shook my head a little when the ring came Crane's way.
No it doesn't; it seeks out those capable of wielding fear and molding it to their purposes. There's a huge difference.
Joker has no interest in controlling anyone through fear. The majority of people within the DC universe have no diea who Vandal savage is; he's always been a behind the scnes player, and sure while as readers we know he's a greater threat to the world than Crane, you could hardly say using fear has been a major part of his MO over the millenia. He generally takes over governments internally through either stelth and guile or direct force of arms, and then acts like any other general. I mean okay, people the world over were scared of him when he was Genghis Khan; but Sinistro doesn't want a rival for control. Id give Savage an Orange ring. Waller however... hmm, yeah I;ll give you that. She'd be on my short list. Though I'd still say Scarecrow's knowledge of pharmacuiticology and pychology would be more useful for the corps. (see above).

No, the ring seeks out those who have the ABILITY to instill great fear.
Sounds like Scarecrow to a T.
Gas or not, given a ring that can produce ANYTHING the user wants....the scarecrow would have become one of Batman's nastiest/scariest enemies EVER!
For those saying he [Scarecrow] is nothing without the gas....what about the Sinestro Corps member Despotellis, who is a virus?!? It's the same thing....affecting someone chemically and instilling great fear through death of a foreign agent in your blood stream.
It's a specific quirk that they can use to scare people that makes these Sinestro Corps agents dangerous. Plus they get "reprogrammed" on Qward so we don't know what would have happened after the fact!

I just finish reading the series. We them showing the 5 types of new rings Now they show Mongul geting a ring at the end but who is to say that wont be the last super-villan to get a ring what if Darkseid gets a black ring a red ring and a yellow ring .. could we say ouch .. That could have Sinestro working with the GL again to stop him ... or this could just be hog-wash

I really think that we'll see Sinestro begrudgingly team up with Hal and the GLC to stop the Blackest Night from happening. Sinestro doesn't want to destroy the universe......just control it.
