I don't necessarily agree with your view MechThran. For instance I think gameplay is more important in getting people into a game. The fluff really is what keeps you there. Fluff never got me into CBT, big robots and fun games with friends (and an RPG tie-in) is what did that. The fluff is something I initially tolerated but eventually followed.
Ultimately the problem I always had with the fluff was the inherent schitzophrenia in every character, whose personality would change depending on whether they were a protaganist or antagonist and whether they were a major character or a minor one. In one book Victor would be incredibly intelligent and insightful and in the next would commit blunders a first grader wouldn't make.
The outcomes of books and the history even changed over time with the history being frequently re-written.
But as with everything nostalgic, people forget the bad bits and put their own colour on what they perceive as the good bits. That's why the historicals could never work even if they did Natasha Kerensky in a reseen MkI Warhammer with awesome stats (to my mind +2/+2/+1 is pretty hot when combined with the pilot ability but it still isn't good enough for some people...).
Why shouldn't other Mechwarrior have the skills, or better skills, than the recognised greats. What makes a great individual is not only what your potential is but whether you realise that potential. I listened to someone comparing Favre to Marino on the weekend and they concluded Favre was the better QB. Why? Because he had a Superbowl ring and he'd taken Marino's record.
In reality he just realised his potential because he was in the right team. And he was in the right Conference. At the right time. And he stayed fit.
Is he better than Marino? Maybe as an all-round QB but there are too many other variables to be certain, even of that. Even if Favre is a better all-round QB, is he more skilled at his position? We'll never know.
The evidence is that all of the "great" Mechwarriors were also great leaders. Their people excelled around them. They wanted to emulate them. They also had an aura and were feared and perhaps their opponents gave them too much respect as a result (I've seen that on the football field too). It's easier to be good when everyone around you is too.
The purpose of this? Stats are not everything. Just because someone is great does not mean they have the best skills out there.
That QB comparison. Nobody ever raised an eyebrow when someone said Joe Montana was great. No debate. Yet compare his skill stats (not win stats, not number of Superbowl rings) to the others.

I pretty much agree with you on everything but one thing.
That is how a "Legend" has the stats of 2/2/1 on her card. I don't really dissagree that she is very good with those stats and really doesn't need to be any better with her pilot ability. I think the problem is that when WK started pilots they made them too cheap and made too many of the very best stats right up front. It left them very little room to improve them when they decided to make legendary pilots. So instead of a few great pilots and alot of good pilots we have a huge number of pilots that are "Great". So pretty much it makes the statement "when everybody is great, nobody is" seem to apply.
Yeah you know the whole problem with the game going downhill in popularity so bad after set retirement that it was removed as policy after they fired most of the people that were in charge when it was implemented.
As for you not being able to get some Heavy IT cards well tough. I know a ton of people who couldn't get a ton of the top units and had to make due. I am sure that cards like H/IT are like those hard to get units. Be glad they are reprinting them and not retiring them as they had originally been planning by now.
And I am sure that it was totally not the vocal minority that was part of the outcry against things like the twins or the SS AIV. Because the vocal minority is only out to get YOU and ruin the game for you.
How about the Large Vocal Minority that was all over WK and the horrible quality control during the Annihilation fiasco? The vocal minority then totally had to be different people.
How about you throw out some more worthless labels while you complain loudly about how other people have totally MADE WK ruin this game. Because you obviously couldn't have ever been a part of the "vocal minority" at any point in time.
That totally had to be just me. So please feel free to label me as a member of the "Vocal Minority".
Now where is my bumper sticker.
Yeah, I was there in the Vocal for the Annihilation QC. And was one of the first to cry foul when I saw the size of the Wasp and the sculpt of the Thunderbolt.
Not attacking you personal Looter. Just very tired of the rules changes from WK after a Vocal Minority complains. It seems that WK changes the rules often to appease the VMs and all it leads to is confusion reqarding FAQs and the fans of game at each other throats.

I didn't figure you were attacking me personally. I have to admit I am probably the loudest about this subject and you disagree with me so you would probably have to use one of my posts as an example.
I understand your point to be honest and I don't want FAQ's any more than you do. I would have preferred that WK do these and other aspects of their game right in the first place to be honest. Well right from my point of view of course.
These units are quite polarizing. I will have to say that like all the game pieces I still like to collect these. I just find them to be a let down. I had known WK would make them wrong somehow. But a letdown all the same.
