play grodd legend society deck and use Coup d'etat to stop sage or mariko (would be nice, but shift isn't considered recruiting, so coup won't work :()
society/runaways and try to mill them out using runaways stuff and unnatural selection/riddler
riddler could mill a 3 cost and stop common bond or a 1 cost and stop warp shards
This may be the opposite of what people are looking for, but here are a few updates for Exiles.
For the primary deck, I've realized a few things:
*Shadowcat's ability is rarely used; more often than not, she was just being used for costing 3
*I wanted more unique names for bigger damage packets
*I wasn't comboing out nearly often enough... watching Riddle play, he always searched for as many Marikos as he could, this is generally a far better strategy, as it leads to more burn (assuming you have the clone).
So here's the updated version. Bottom line: 4 Clashes (3 was just dumb), more unique 3-drop names (going off-team just to get them), Death of a Dream instead of The Retaliator (my only 2 legit losses have been to Illuminati, and only because they played Pathetic Attempt. Death actually can't be Patheticed if there is something you need off bad enough, and you always have spare 2s you can tap for the effect):
// Spells
4 [MEV] Beak Saves the Day {MEV}
4 [MEV] A Finer World {MEV}
4 [DLS] Mobilize {DLS}
4 [MEV] Warp Shards {MEV}
4 [DCX] A Clash Of Worlds {DCX}
4 [MEX] Common Bond {MEX}
3 [MUN] Death Of The Dream {MUN}
Also, think Exiles are too expensive to play? They're not... after evaluating and realizing Shadowcat / Panc were only "OK", and Blink generates 3-4 free resource points (followed by 7-8 free resource points from a Beak's... remember to chain beak's, then pull out blink so you don't have to pay a point to put Beak back into play). Anyway, this version can go off on turn 4, but takes odds and tries for 5. Often it "sucks down" counters for Mystique off of the 1 drops and builds her up as part of the kill plan. It replaces the lack of search with a ton of draw engines. And notice if you crossover Weapon X with Exiles you can actually use We Can Rebuild to get over that critical resource point for shifting the guy. The scary thing was: I played this version vs my other Modern decks and was STILL crushing, and it has 0 rares. Kinda came from a discussion I was having with someone, how it doesn't really matter what you do if you're generating 8-20 free resource points by 5, you're still going to beat nearly everything else:
// Spells
4 [DCX] A Clash Of Worlds {DCX}
4 [MEV] We Can Rebuild Him {MEV}
4 [MEV] X-Babies Attack {MEV}
4 [MEV] Beak Saves the Day {MEV}
4 [MEV] Cutting Loose {MEV}
Obviously you don't get common bond, but you more consistantly get large recruits. Shatterstar is an excellent beak's target if you fail to get Mariko going. Mulligan almost exclusively for Blink, assuming you can't afford to get some search in (note the much higher character count to circumvent a lack of search). If you can't get clashes the deck does take a little downturn, but even then it's not awful... just replace it with some more "large scale" beatdown effects (Combat Reflexes is good so you can play it if your opponent is stopping your combat plot twists).
According to Docx's excellent search engine (http://www.io.com/~docx/vs/search.php), Common Bond is not Modern legal. Can anyone confirm either way? (Wasn't MVL released in August 2007, and MCG in December?)
Maybe some kind of team-up deck is what's in order? Illuminati seems strong, but maybe an X-Men/FF combo would provide better lockdown. Just a loose, untested outline:
4x Professor X, Protector of the Mind Gem
4x Black Bolt, Enemy Within
4x Mr. Fantastic, Protector of the Power Gem
3x Captain America, The Patriot * Secret Avenger
4x Iceman, Jack Frost
1x Black Bolt, Protector of the Space Gem
4x The Captain, Can't Remember His Real Name
2x Iron Man, Protector of the Reality Gem
1x Lex Luthor, Metropolis Mogul
1x Dr. Strange, Ally of the Four
1x Mimic, Exile
1x Professor X, World's Most Powerful Telepath
1x Thing, The Ever-Loving Blue-Eyed Thing
1x Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd
After a few rounds or testing while playing Exiles I noticed:
*Starjammer Prof X slows the synergy of the deck.
*PA/Omni are somewhat essential.
*A strong visable board counters the swarm on turns 4 & 5 but after that, it depends on each plyers draw/plays.

Saw this in another thread and thought it might help here.
None of these cards deal with the massive burn Mariko can deal. Time Platform sounds really interesting though.
If it's something like: "At the start of the combat phase, all players endurance totals become equal to what they were at the start of the build/recruit/draw phase." it might be just what we need.
Caliban + Sinister 3 (to stop activation)+X-Gene+Neverland + Malleable and Pathetic + Pale Rider = Thats all I got.
CC
I don't have an Exiles deck to test against yet, but I have been toying with something like this in the form of Sinister Legend. It involves at all cost getting a Sinister shifted out so that you can get Sinister, The Captain , and Sinister/Mystique into play by turn five with No More Mr. Nice Guy in the resource row and Malleable DNA and Pathetic Attempt to hold things in tact. When it hits it seems to wreck what it playing (I never realized how much life you save with Malleable DNA or how bad X-Gene Decoded screws your opponent), but it's not overly consistent yet. Gonna keep testing it.
Is it just me or did they reprint 5 drop mr fantastic. 5 drop MR.FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! Oh my flipping god things are gonna get busted when he comes out. Hope those promos are real and what thread did you pick up this tidbit of info from?
