Originally posted by Goodtimes It will be interesting to see a Longbow vs. Kodiak duel. My money's on the Longbow (but we haven't seen all of its stats yet).
Die, Clanner! Die!
Let see, longbow vs Kodiak
Defense: 20 vs go to a 24 after 3 clicks:mad:
Min range on there primary Weapon: 3" vs 0"
Damage on primary weapon: 5w/ap vs up to 6/steak
Cost: 261 pts vs 253 pts
My Final theory: I could go on a rant that would last for days until I got ban, but I won't. All I'll say is this: We get the shaft yet again my fellow HLers. Finally a mech with 24 defense and the best part about it.....IT NOT OURS  . Thank again WK for supporting my faction EVER SO POORLY!!!
i'm sorry, but the "after three clicks" is the key phrase there. if the longbow can get in a good shot, it'll knock the kodiakc right past the point where Tetro would be shaking in his boots
I'm sorry, but I have to point this out. Everyone keeps saying "just hit him hard and he's done, get in that good shot, etc. etc." Well, Wizkids took care of that common SW problem by giving this nasty rather nice repair markers (which I appreciate, WK). So even if the player is silly and lets someone pop him hard before hand, you can fix him a little (so you hope). And if the player avoids getting shot, and warms that Kodiak up a little, his speed becomes seven, so if you're concerned about getting in a gunfight with someone who'll shoot through your armor...you can CHARGE!!...something we don't get to do very often with SW units. Then, some of them can't shoot you with their big gun, being inside the minimum...and if they can, let 'em try and hit your defense after five or six damage from the charge. Then you can stand there and rapid strike them, just to be insolent (which is what I think that rapid trike is for...pure insolence. "Sure, I'll take the extra heat, just so I can rip you apart instead of blowing you up :) Pure insolence).
Now what's this nonsense about this Kodiak being no match for the other assault mechs one on one??!!
Scary 'mech, yes, but the sucker's still expensive. Just offhand for my Republic force, I can imagine a number of incidental solutions that rise out of armies I've field before (that is, armies that weren't built specifically to Kodiak hunt):
Fa Shih + DI Towed
Any Knight with a dropped formation shot (11+2+2 --> 15, meaning a net 9 to hit).
Similar solutions are present for all the other factions I play, and all other factions generally. The repairability is sorta cool, but once he's down far enough to be a good target (that is, hittable for the repair action), he's a very good target for general-purpose smacking.
But the Kodiak's still pretty cool. Requires some thought to deal with, and a sane person might even field one in a 300 point head to head game. Neat.
I think the reason why this is so cheap is because the lack of SEs... we get about 4-5 clicks of streaks, and 4-5 clicks of RS, and 3-4 clicks of heavy armor... not exactly a colorful combat dial. That drops the price a bit, along with the SW dial discount...
I see this thing as being potent because it takes a good *9* clicks of damage before you reduce it under 9 attack and 4 damage.
This beasty more or less had all the predictable reactions to it, from awe to orgasm to Highlanders whining. Then again Highlander whine about everything these days. They are like one giant drone of a bagpipe. Anyways...
Now that I've had some time to stop and think about this, the Kodiac is indeed very impressive, though not the unstoppable killing machine people seem to believe it is. And while it may be a little undercosted, it's not game-breakingly so.
The dual issue at play is the 24 deffence/sweetspot. For all those who think 24 defence is too high, especially given the mech's cost. What seems to be overlooked is only unlucky or ignorant opponents will ever have to deal with the dreaded 24. It's not that hard to keep a mech from being exactly 3 clicks into it's dial. Popping it for 4 or 5 on a 20 defence isn't hard, nor is hitting a 22 to drive it well past Mr. Sweety. As for repairing it back, one would have to hit at least a 21 and roll a 4 or higher for repair. Not impossible, but not likely.
While this is a cool mech, the 24 defence is FAR from a sure thing and there are many options to avoid it entirely. But woe to anyone who does have to deal with it.
PS: If you think the Highlanders suck so much, play a different faction. Plaid wankers.

Of course we're whining. When your favorite faction gives up everything else in order to get better defense, and then another faction gets the highest defense in the game, one feels entitled to a little whining ;)
(I loved the comment about the Kodiak not having a very colorful dial what with it "only" having 12 clicks of three different SE's... try looking at Highlander dials sometime - not much color on them at all, mostly a bunch of grey on defense and not much else).

Bah. We're just overly loyal to our faction and wish we'd get a few more units that make _other_ faction players envious of _us_ for a change. That doesn't change the fact that we're all completely insane, and thus keep playing faction pure Highlander armies ;)

I was wondering where you were Codesurge...
BTW, snake ain't so bad on the menu either. But I rather just shoot them in the head with my air-gun...
They hate it, don't you?

I don't necesarrily believe that this is true. On the first turn, suppose I place the Kodiak in my DP in a manner that 1,2 or 3 artillery damage from my own artillery (non-AP) can hit the Kodiak. If you are playing SW artillery (read padilla), you often want to get a volley off in the first turn before there are any tokens on your opponents units, so you can push into the prime clicks. First turn, Kodiak is safe from charge by Arnis and can be put at his 24 defense quite reliably if you use the right artillery. I am not a fan of dealing damage to myself, but if I see Arnis on the table, why not? 24 defense + 360 arc will virtually eliminate Arnis's viable attack options.
If you have a reasonable way to stop this tactic (not a perfect counter army -- but maybe a few counter units...), let me know. I think it is even quite possible if you lose initiative to still be able to pull this off with a temporary meatshield. If you opponent lays artillery, you don't even have to waste the orders. I'm planning on playing against a lot of "unlucky or ignorant opponents" with this mech. :)
A reasonable 450 point force might look something like this...
Please don't replay bashing on the lack of an artiilery screen... please. This is just a 2 min. example.
Here you can even get the Mob/Hoverbike/Fenrirs into prime if you deploy them near the Kodiak. While preventing the 2nd turn Arnis charge (if you are 2nd player).
Well. I guess we Highlanders will have to fall back on our second-best, frequent equipment type. Electronic Camouflage!
Ugh.
My personal theory on the whole defense debacle is this: Something happens to our boss lady in the next set, and Eriabee Childs' call for a return to the less charitable mercenary days of the Highlanders is answered. Who knows, maybe we're being geared up with armour piercing for a showdown with our old friends the Liao?
And don't let PureChe get to you, guys. You could always bug him about his precious Spirit Cat artillery and transports.
