No scouting is a rule in just about every CCG, our team playtests with each other and have sponsorship from our gaming store. We also spilt any prize money earned.
That makes it a moot point as everyone scouted even when it wasn't legal to. Kinda levels the playing field.
If you want to level the playing field, have each player be required to show their deck to the other player before they play each other. Otherwise, some players will be able to scout better than others (or have more friends to scout for them).
I just looked through the UDE tournament guidelines and see no mention of scouting. Were I the Head Judge, I would categorise it as an "Unsporting Conduct-Cheating" penalty since the player is scouting intentionally and doing so to gain an unfair advantage in the game. If I weren't the Head Judge, I'd report it to the Head Judge with the same recommendation.
It is impossible to eliminate scouting unless you make each match take place in a separate room and allow no one to talk between rounds.
Friends are gonna talk to their friends about what they played against. You can watch the 2 matches going on beside you.
How can you stop that kind of "scouting." You CAN"T.
Therefore, you let everyone scout.
Just thought I'd add that in the Top 8 of a constructed event on the Pro Tour level I'm pretty sure that decklists of your opponent are available to you before your matches. Just need one of the YMG people confirm this.
Half the fun of going to tournaments is getting to watch other people play too. I hope they dont make stupid rules to prevent you from watching other people matches :(
I used to be a swccg judge and scouting happens in local tourneys, but once you hit the big tournaments, they used to kick everyone out. What they should do is pair people up according to thier numbers that way your friends wont be able to easily remember a name or two. When I go to Philly, I dont plan on scouting out decks or having friends do it for me. Scouting is lame, but it cant be avoided, if half of the playing field is all a group of friends, then possibly everyone on that team could know what everyone is playing and how they are playing it after the first round. Hey kdem2357 pm me and we'll playtest if you want to.
If you don't scout and other people do, then all you are doing is punishing yourself.
If you spent all the time to prepare for the tournament yet don't avail yourself to everything that is legal to do, why bother to play in a tournament?
LOL, thanks for the link Stu! This is hilarious. So how did that deck do for you at Origins harles2000? I distinctly remember seeing no new or broken decks there.
