I was against yeet at first, but it feels like enough people have joked about it already that it's unlikely to get confused with any other meaning. And I'm frankly tired of trying to come up with something different. I'll prefer something silly to something bland any day of the week.
I found myself getting a little over emotional with this thread (as y’all know I’m apt to do, lol), so I took a step back and thought my words carefully.
In regards to a slippery slope of “removing” words, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with evolving. The word isn’t disappearing from the dictionary, we’re just choosing not to use that particular word because of its connotation.
There are plenty of words that have removed themselves from my personal dictionary over the years. Retard being one of them. It’s not a bad word in and of itself, but it’s usage as a slur makes it an undesirable word to use. Same with gay. That word should Never be used to equate to something lesser or stupid. F——t is a crappy word as well, never used and never will. Same with N——r.
Those are not forgotten and still used in the negative way that they were meant for, but so much less so as people have grown and matured and evolved. There’s nothing wrong with that.
When actual lynching is a thing that people still do to oppress and threaten POC to this day, there’s nothing wrong with us taking a proactive step and using a different term. It doesn’t erase that word or its history, but it will help make some of our members (myself included) feel more comfortable. And I consider you guys family, so making sure that none of us feel uncomfortable (over something that can easily be fixed) is a good thing to me.
What, am I normal or not?
Am I crazier than other patients?
Right, I've done everything right.
So where's the karma, doc? I've lost my patience.
I actually really like "flip," relating to the idea of the role card being flipped over to reveal one's identity.
I have seen this same discussion play out on multiple forums and discords and this is the best suggestion I have seen so far.
People already use "flip" in mafia games to refer to the act of revealing a player's role during the day via lynch. It's already a synonym for lynch from a mechanical standpoint that is in pretty wide use. It's violent in some ways (the idea of flipping over a dead body) but not racial in any way and not even violent on its face to an outsider looking in.
Edit: Maybe not. People will say stuff like "Jack got vig killed and he flipped wolf. Let's go find his partners" so it becomes duplication of language for two separate mechanics.
Edit Edit: This has mostly been talked over but I think there's some early thread conflating of different things.
Players vote during the day. Previously, the L word would be used sometimes in place of "vote: player." This practice should stop. That's easy.
Hosts do their own writeups. Players were previously checked out, dried up, L worded etc. Hosts can still do whatever as long as they don't use the L word. Pretty easy. And flavor is a good thing!
The key reason for this discussion is that there still exists a need to describe the mechanic of players voting a player out of the game during the day. I'm willing to bet people weren't talking about who they should dry out in Kness's game so that's entirely separate from host language. Similarly, there is a difference between talking about voting a player and voting a player out of the game so I think it's entirely separate from what players say when they vote.

People keep saying "That will never happen" right up until it actually does.
I'm not saying that someone will target HCRealms specifically. I'm saying that someone will come along and decide that Mafia/Werewolf is harmful and problematic. And that person or those people will push to get the game cancelled. Maybe they'll link it to the Salem Witch Trials. Maybe they'll make the case that the inherent nature of Mafia celebrates ostracizing 'the other' and has no place in a society that should be focused on building communities rather than finding people to villainize.
Regardless, that cancellation movement will spread to HCRealms. Someone will eventually take notice of "Hey, these other communities are talking about how Mafia is insensitive and hurtful" or "People I know are discussing how they find Mafia to be problematic" and the question will arise - "For the sake of empathy and being sensitive to others, should we do away with Mafia entirely?"
Absurd.
There are 165 communitiens playing in the MafiaUiverse championship this year. Ultimate Werewolf released 2 years ago. Mafia is literally at the height of its popularity.
Dozens of violent video games and movies come out every year. Why would mafia be targeted in this way?
