Beginner's Luck: A new player's guide to HeroClix by rock810 - Part 2
Top Ten Figures
For new players the tough job is figuring out what figures to play. The general suggestion to this is to just play what you like until you get a hang of the rules and try to stay basic. A figure like changeling or a figure with a starting click might be a bit difficult to run if you have no real understanding of the basic powers and abilities. If you are not sure what you like then please allow me to make some suggestions. Please remember when reading this that it is directed at new players who generally do not have access to an Ultimate thor or Amazo or other high price unique. The figures I picked are based on ease of playability and competive quality.
MY PERSONAL OPINION of the TOP 10 figure to acquire in no particular order:

MARVEL Attacktix Battle Figure Game- Game Developer TRANSFORMERS Bot Shots Battle Game - Game Designer
*Black Adam is one of the cheapest Hypersonic, damage dealing pieces out there. He is consistent through his dial and is not hindered by a high defense so he can be healed very easily. Plain and simple he is a fun piece to play with and he can help you win games.
2) Jean Grey (all levels)
*Telekinesis is what is going to get your figures into battle the fastest. Jean Grey is probably the cheapest TK piece out there and she keeps TK for most of her dial. The veteran is always a great piece to play because of her click of support.
3) Black Panther (Rookie or Experienced)
*Black Panther is the cheapest outwitter in the game, plain and simple. Until fortitude comes out, Outwit is going to be key to winning games.
4) Paramedic (all levels)
*The paramedic on every level is cheap and effective. She has a higher attack value then most of the other healers out there, her only fall back is War Zone can make her useless.
5) Batman (Hypertime Experienced)
*The most available Batman Ally out there is the experienced Batman because he is available in the DC premier kits. Batman is tough to deal with and has a DEEP dial. Throw taunt on him and force your opponents hand while you use willpower to dish out some damage.
6) Northstar (all levels)
*Northstar may not have a deep dial, but he has a 12 move with hypersonic and does not cost more than 72 points. Literally he is the cheapest hypersonic piece in the game. The Rookie and experienced are both avengers so you can move and attack for free with him.
7) Green Lantern (Unleashed Experienced or Veteran)
*Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern rocks plain and simple. His high defense make him hard to hit and add on top of that a nice move with running shot and an incredible range. Put trick shot on this Green Lantern and take your opponent out.
8) Hawkeye (Ultimates Veteran)
*The Ultimates set introduced us to many characters we had seen in the past but felt needed something more. Hawkeye is a brute. His 8 range and HIGH attack with the ultimate team ability make him a valuable piece on any team.
9) Captain America (Ultimates Experienced or Veteran)
*They made Captain America just right in the ultimates set. He does not ever get a huge damage, but he does get outwit, flurry and exploit weakness. Works for me.
10) Raven (Experienced or Veteran)
*Raven is one of the best support pieces out there. She starts with Incapacitate, Barrier and Probability control allowing her to protect your team. She later gets support and regeneration. Throw auto regeneration on her and she will have some staying power to annoy your opponent to no end.

LEGACY NON's MUST HAVES FOR THE BEGINNNER
1) Wildfire (Experienced and Veteran)
With a team of beatsticks emerges a true finesse piece. The Wildfire figure packs enough bang for its points to give trouble to even the toughest of opponents. In all terms he is a poor man's Ironman, but better in many ways. He has a high attack value, Running shot, a good range and nice defensive abilities; but what sets him above is his Legion team ability. Need outwit copy superman enemy, need to hide use batman team ability, I can go on and on. Wildfire is a balanced piece and a must have for a beginner.
The basic use of this figure is to make use of his running shot and nice range and damage abilities. The plus side to him is that he has the legion team ability so if you throw in an alfred pog he has stealth and throw a mystic figure on your team and he can deal damage when he takes damage. Enjoy this piece as he is one of my personal favorites in this set.
2) Batman (all levels)
With the emergence of legacy comes a new Batman. This time better than any we have seen before. He is tough plain and simple. A high attack rate, high move, high defense, and a great range attack. For what he does he is fairly inexpensive as well. If you like Batman, or you just like a cheap beat stick that can stick around for a long time, Batman is going to be the piece to grab come game time.
Such a tough piece all around, Batman offers so many options when you choose him. The rookie is a tough little beat stick with the outsiders team ability that can take apart a team that relys on perplexers and other boosting abilities to win games; the experienced piece gets even stronger and joins up with the JLA to take on the toughest of foes; then you have the crown and glory of the Batman figures in this set: The veteran Batman. He has a high attack value, a high defense and a high range. He does some nice damage throughout his dial and sports the batman team ability so you can hide in stealth and not worry to much about your opponents getting too close. He clocks in at a low 111 points perfect to fit in any build total and powerful enough to take on all comers.
3) Arsenal (Experienced and Veteran)
Arsenal is DC's answer to Ultimate Hawkeye. His Running shot, high range and decent damage dealing make him a good piece to add to any team. Another bonus is that he is cheap for what he does though be careful he drops fast use him early and effectively against your opponents bigger figures.
4) Obsidian (Experienced and Veteran)
Psychic blast make Obsidian dangerous, with only a handful of psychic blast pieces in the game he really takes the cake with a rather high range and nice attacking abilities. Add into that that he is mystic and your opponent will have a tough time taking him down.
His rookie is a little weak with that starting click so he has to push to get to the sweet stuff. If you are going to use Obsidian take the higher up pieces. They both start with phasing and a nice 8 range with psychic blast and three damage. The piece to take though is the Veteran as he sports the mystic team ability and is guaranteed to start dishing out the damage.
5) Captain Atom (Experienced and Veteran)
This piece I am a bit biased with. He is one of my favorite DC figues and he is tough as nails. He boasts the longest range in the DC legacy set and does 4 damage for a significant amount of his dial. Add on top of that he has running shot and super strength and you have the poor mans Ultimate Thor. Oh yeah did I mention he has 10 clicks of life, get him NOW.
NOTABLE MENTIONS

SUPER WOMAN REV
HOURMAN REV
IMPULSE/KID FLASH REV
BLOCKBUSTER EV
Legacy is a set of beat sticks and bruisers. The introduction of this set officially will change tournaments around the world. Old teams will be pushed to the back of the bus or substituted with new fresh and stronger characters. Enjoy this set for all it's worth because it may be the most powerful set to date. Also be prepared for incapacitate to become probably one of the strongest and most used abilities with the emergence of the stunning blow feat.
COMPLIMENT YOUR FIGURES
When building your team each figure should compliment the others abilities or they should be able to assist each other in some way. Have a 250 point mainstay figure in a 300 point game with no back-up is simply giving you opponent the game. Look at your figures and think. If character A can TK character B I can get to my opponents faster. Complimenting a figure means quite a few things though. It means quick movement (TK, Flyers, Free move, ETC...), Support (Healers, Perplexers, Outwitters...), Defense (Shared defense, Barrier, probability control...), back up (If one figure dies the game should not be over). Build your team evenly one of the best rules of thumb is you should average out to around 50 points when you are done making your team (Example 300 points=6 figures-GOOD, 300 points with 3 figures-Going to be tough if you have not played for long)
Team building is tough when you first start and don't have many figures. Make due and stick with it and your collection will grow. Most of all enjoy the game, the uniques and LE's are fun and often add a little something to competitive play, though it is the Non-unique figures that make the game what it is. The truth of it is that many of us who have played for a long time should get back to our roots by playing teams of non-unique figures and not relying as much on Thors, amazos, or nightcrawlers. Often a swarm of Non-unique figures easily takes out the bigger guy who can not stand up to the combined force of multiple figures that work well together. Well I hope I added a little something to your game play, Good day and good gaming!!!!!!!!!
Very interesting post, and for the most part, I'd agree with you, but there are a few points I'd like to add to this.
If this list is directed at new players, and based on no particular bias, why wasn't the con-artist put on the list? personally, I don't use them, but I'd not advise against a new player learning the power of perplex for 11 points.
I'll go through your list individually....
1) Black Adam - I've not used him, but I've played against him so many times, I keep wondering why I don't use him. This guy is nails. Excellent piece, and now that I've redone his sculpt a bit, I think I may have to give him a go. Good advice.
2) Jean Grey - I don't use her. Not that I'm saying she's a bad piece, but I've had much more luck with Johnny Alpha (rookie). he's a telekinetic, but can also fight after everyone and everything's been thrown into the fray. Plus, he adds a nice little bonus to your wildcards.
3) Black Panther - nothing to add here. Long live the King of Wakanda!
4) Paramedic - I've been playing most of my tourneys without them as of late, but they're good. If you want to try another option though... check the Intergang Medics. Sure they're pricey, but they do add that lovable anti-supes ability to your team... and with a wildcard like Livewire equipped with Trickshot (can you tell I love the wildcards?)... let the fun begin.
5) Batman - good advice. Hate the character, but love the clix. Rookie Huntress is a great option as well for the Batman TA. She definitely has the mojo.
6) Northstar - avoid the Vet unless you're an X-Man junkie. Stick weth the XP. I do think there are better ways to flesh out an army though.
7) Green Lantern - Good piece. worth the time and effort.
8) Hawkeye - This Ultimate piece should have been near the top of the list. Yes, the Vet is good, but don't count out the experienced version. He gives you the second cheapest ultimate TA and is a nice sharpshooter to boot.
9) Captain America - This Ultimate guy should have been tops on the list. My favorite piece to play currently.
As to your Legacy choices, I saw only one thing that really stood out to me. Where is Jinx? She is so playable, and runs my new favorite power... psychic blast, plus... wait for it.... she's a wildcard.
As I said... good post. We need so many more posts to new players.
Technically, Northstar isn't the cheapest HSS out there - I think Jesse Quick has him beat there, but Northstar is much more useful thanks to his 2 Damage.
Jinx is a great piece I will give everyone that, her Veteran is very rock hard, though she is a finesse piece. To use her to her full abilities and potential I think one must have experience. Though just for you guys I will do a quicky on her
*) JINX Experienced and Veteran
Both versions of Jinx pack enough punch to make even Thor say Ow that hurt. Two clicks of psychic blast and then a few clicks of pulse wave mean she is going to be doing some damage to somebody. She is front loaded with Probability control so much like Raven she is a good support piece while remaining to be a great attacker. Her Phasing ability allows her to move in and out of terrain at leisure, plus add on to that she is a wildcard so feel free to abuse her while using mystics, batman or other team abilities. Her downfall is that she has a low defense and no damage reducing abilities, and she is rather shallow on her dial. Her Experienced boasts only a 6 range while the veteran has a solid 8 range. She will be tough in the marquee, but I think in regular game play other players will just play keep away from her.
If you like psychic blast and are a strict DC person I would more suggest Obsidian as a piece, while he is more expensive he dishes out more damage and has a higher attack value.
Well I hope you guys enjoyed, Good day and good gaming

Thank you...I have just spent the last 10 minutes cleaning tea off my computer screen after laughing when I read this. My office mates have a new reason to think I am nuts.
