Does that mean Sinestro and Sentinel are still allowed in Open play?

Yes.

Wizkids has stated on muliple occasions that they will not retire the Sentinel or Sinestro. While I think it is a little strong to say "never" (after all, they orginally said they wouldn't retire figures, period.), I think we can safely assume that Sentinel and Sinestro will retain active status for the forseeable future.

What made them change their mind? Was it anything other than the almighty dollar?

Retirement eliminates some broken aspects of the game, but I think they are taking it too far.

There are certain figures that were too abusive, i.e. Ultron, Firelord, etc. Even Con Artists and Paramedics can be abusive (I personally say that there's a still a conter for every strategy in this game). There are also figures that become abusive because of feats (use Ant-Man for a 20 defense all around Avengers-Defenders-JSA team). So retirement eliminates characters from strategies that would frustrate all but the best players.

A "banned list" would be a much better idea. Too many respectable options are being kept out of Open play now. I'm having a tough time figuring out who to use on my Regional team. A bunch of figures from my old team were retired.
