“Ready the teleporter for one last beam,” Aquaman said to the Atom.
“Hold on, something’s wrong,” Atom said, looking over the readouts. “There’s been an odd buildup in the frequency, and now it’s almost like…”
He was cut off by a flash of light as the Watchtower teleportational device was hijacked. As the burst of brilliance dimmed, several men marched off of the platform, armed to the teeth and clad in LexCorp battle-armor. Prometheus leapt out and hurled a disc that shut down the Watchtower’s electronics in one fell swoop. Circe flew forward, her hands alight with foul magic, and a smile on her face. A sick, twisted cackle could be heard, as the crowd of villains parted for the dead-white face of the Joker. Finally, Lex Luthor, himself, stepped off the platform, tugging his cufflinks and looking smugly superior.
“It seems that the Atom missed the program I had Prometheus hide in the Justice League mainframe. Your teleportation is now under our control.” Luthor nodded at Prometheus. “He’s really quite ingenious with machines. Didn’t even ask for money in exchange for breaking into your precious base that first time – just a crack at the fighting profiles we were having him download. And a peek at a few other trifles while he was here…”
”Whatever the case,” Aquaman said, standing firm beside Wonder Woman, his fists clenched. “You only made our work easier. The jig is up, Luthor – we’re on to you.”
“Oh, really,” Luthor said walking calmly forward until he was inches from Aquaman’s face. “Only fair, I suppose, since I’m on to you, as well. All this ‘secret identity’ nonsense – surely, you realized it was only a matter of time before somebody figured you out? So much the sweeter that it was one of your own who turned her coat and came to the Kingpin when he called.”
“What have you done with Superman,” Flash asked. He was keeping his eyes on the many opponents entering the room and trying to size up their odds. Hopefully he would be able to keep Luthor talking long enough for him to devise a strategy.
“I haven’t done a thing, sadly. He would have been my first target – he was the only one of you mutant freaks who interested me, anyway. Imagine my surprise when I found out I was beaten to it. When we disabled Superman, we found it wasn‘t the Alien at all, but a robot instead. The machine was taken back to Ivo and my own Lexcorp scientists so we could pillage it‘s secrets. The shell became the skeleton for the Amazo unit you met. Looking back on it, I had realized that this too was part of the Kingpin’s plan. He must have known it was a robot. Watching the tapes of Superman in the previous few months, I should have known as well. All the clues were there, after all. Still, the machine allowed Ivo’s research to progress by leaps and bounds – Amazo would never have been possible without that alien technology.”
”You can drop the act,” Aquaman asked. “We know that you’re the Kingpin; the architect of all this madness. If you think you can walk in here and pretend otherwise, forget it.”
“Yes,” Wonder Woman added. “We cracked open one of your bunkers in the American southwest and found out all about your plans for dominion.”
Luthor had been walking back towards his men, but stopped and looked over his shoulder at her remark. “My…plans?” His eyebrow raised, and then he broke out in laughter. “The fool! The gall of that fool!” Luthor spun on his heels and shrugged. “Well, it appears we have both been had. I am not the Kingpin. He had brought me in on his plot with promises of your secrets if I lent him my aid. I did so, and this was to be the final strike before he handed his intelligence to me.”
“So selling my technology and sending those Kord, Wayne, and Sherwood into collapse…” Atom said with shock.
“Oh, no – I was responsible for all that, yes. But if it’s connected to all of you, I don’t know how.” Luthor grinned. “It was all done on contract – my resources to the Kingpin in exchange for the dirt on all of you.”
“Then you still have to pay,” Green Lantern said, his ring glowing brightly. “And we’ll be the ones to cash your check.”
“Oh, by all means go ahead,” Luthor sighed. “Of course, you’ll be bringing the world down with me.” Lantern turned his head slightly in confusion. “Need it spelled out? Lexcorp is the only thing keeping the United States’ current recession from becoming a full-out crash. When Kord Industrial, Wayne Enterprises, and Sherwood Inc. started their crash, it was me who invested in America’s future. LexCorp is employing the unemployed, rebuilding the damage, pouring money into the economy - turn me in and Lexcorp stock will plummet. If LexCorp goes down, the American dollar goes with it. If the US market crashes, the global market will follow suit.”
The League could only stare – they knew he had them. “Now tell me,” Luthor smiled. “How will you protect the people from what comes after the crash? How will you save them from nature and themselves? I am the lifeblood of this world now. Even if Wayne gets his feet back under him, he’s the only one who can and that still won’t shake my hold on the country.”
“If you aren’t the Kingpin – if he has truly betrayed you as well, then tell us who he is,” Wonder Woman said, her voice low with anger.
“Sorry, no – you don’t get to have it all spelled out for you,” Luthor said, stepping back through the throng of villains behind him. “If I won’t be given your secrets, then it’s time for plan B. After all, why would I care about your secret identities… when you are all dead?”
Flash saw the button in his hand a millisecond too late. He raced forward, but grabbed only air as Luthor teleported out. Then, everything went white as the world exploded outward.

The eruption hit with the force of a tactical nuclear warhead, and the white-hot flash blinded the heroes and villains alike. Green Lantern was able to get a dome up to protect them, but it nearly drained him completely. The Watchtower was destroyed by an explosive force so strong that it buckled Hal’s knees and nearly broke his will – fires burned so hot they escaped into the airless vacuum of space and still burned a moment before snuffing out. When the dust settled, the ruins of the watchtower were ash-black.
A dim field could be seen in the distance. “The Watchtower’s emergency atmospheric generator,” Atom huffed, getting to his knees. “We’ve got maybe an hour before it collapses and we all burst in the vacuum.”
“Not quite,” Prometheus said, standing. Lantern had covered the villains, too, out of reflex, and they seemed to be faring better than the League. Joker’s mad laughter could be heard ringing through the wreckage, and Circe was surrounded by an eerie glow. “As I figure it, you’ve only got a few minutes before we kill you all right here!”
