There's PS3 news out there, and - GASP - it's fairly positive. Aside from the issue with legacy games, nothing to say about it that isn't already known. The news is in the games, and so far they're getting review that range from Not Bad (Tony Hawk 8,000,000.1) to HOLY FRAK WOW (Resistance).
The Wii isn't faring so well in the review department, I'm sorry to say...
Is the PS3 backwards compatible, like the PS2? Sorry, I am not too well informed on this console...

Look through there. No Wii game has yet broken out of the 80's range with any of the Big Three (Gamespot, IGN, 1up).
The closest you get is Gamespy's Zelda review, which they give a perfect score...but it's Zelda, and it's Gamespy, so...
In all seriousness though, I don't go by numbers and reviews. ESPECIALLY Gamespot's reviews. What does bother me about the Wii is that in the reports, I'm reading a lot about how the games don't look THAT good, and the controls are...interesting, at best. I want a lot more from my next-gen console than that.
Though, Gamestop.com is making me an offer I almost can't resist. They're selling a $600 Wii bundle. You get:
The basic Wii package (controller, Wii sports, console, etc.)
2nd Wii Remote w/ Nunchuck
Zelda
Red Steel
Ultimate Alliance
A CRAPLOAD OF OTHER GAMES AND OTHER STUFF
But, I think that if I'm going to spend $600, I'd rather have a powerful console and one game over a less powerful console with a bunch of games.

Yes. It is backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.
HOWEVER...
They have a problem with it. There are 200 known PS1/PS2 games that the PS3 has issues with, specifically the audio. Once they figure out what it is, they will release a patch for download to fix it.
But then, one should never buy first-wave technology. Wait for the second or third release, so you know they've got most of the bugs out.
Of course, these are all launch games. Aside from Zelda, I'm guessing the majority of Wii games were a bit rushed to reach launch. As for the PS3, I'd argue more of a case of launch goggles on. People more amazed at the impressive graphics rather then the gameplay. I remember a similar situation for the PSP where games were getting great scores but each review seemed to degrade into "the graphics are awesome!".
I'm pretty sure the PS3 will be fairing better then the PSP in the long run though. At least I hope it does.

I think the PS3 is going to do fine. Unfortunately, I think fanboyism is running rampant lately. The kids thought they smelled blood in the water, and so they tried to get a few shots in.
The Wii is going to do fine. If it sucked, Nintendo's built-in fanbase would support it. Since I'm pretty sure it won't suck, it will find a nice little niche for itself.
Gah! I would love the Wii, but that controller just doesn't look like my type of playing, but like Smaug said, try it first. So I will and hope I'm wrong.
PS3 mania is all over the place. Have you seen the eBay auction prices for systems that have been reserved already? Averaging about $1700. That's insane.
I have one pre-ordered but for that kind of cash I will sell it and wait.
Meh thats your choice if you choice power over Gameplay.
If I asked you your top 5 favourite Video Games for instance I bet they arent all from the latest the console, or have the best graphics.
Wii will win the war
360 Will come second
PS3 will come last, and thats in my opinion. Remember I used to HATE Xbox but now I respect it at least.
And I agree about the point JGonspy said, People are rating PS3 games cos' of the graphics. None of them will be classic or well remembered games, But Im sure there will be some soon.

Yeah, I learned my lesson there on both the X-box and PS2. It's why I haven't bought a 360 yet (that, and there is really only 1 game exclusive to the 360 that I really want to play, and that just isn't enough to justify the cost), and why I won't buy a PS3 until at least mid-next year. And that's only if they come out with a couple of next-gen exclusive games that I "must" have...

I see it differently. Wii will win the younger croud, who mostly still rely on thier parents to buy thier games.
It's still kind of a toss-up between the PS3 and 360 as to who will win the hard-core console gamers. I believe PS3 will win overall on the world scale because, as much as America spends on games, Japan spends at least as much, if not more. And Sony has a solid base over there, as well as here. The 360 might take over the North America market share, but that's iffy.
Wii has more than twice the cost advantage the gamecube had, so even if they are only equally popular and everything else stays the same, Wii will come out on top.
PS2/100mil/2 PS3 = 50 million sold
GC/25mil*2 Wii= 50 million
Xbox/~25mil*1 Xbox360 = 25mil (Although the 360 is well on there way to perhaps 35 million or even possibly 40, as much as I hated the first xbox, I do not like sony at all this time)
That is about how I see it, price advantage will make up the difference. Everyone who can no longer afford the PS3 will buy a wii for sure. Some people won't buy any. If PS3 cannot prove reliability in time to continue in picking up sales next year, expect the xbox and wii to carry nearly the entire market.
I don't think there is a demand for a system twice as expensive when technology can scale to the other hardware (same games on every system, even if they don't look quite as good). Most money isn't made off of hardcore gamers. In fact, per unit and per game, nintendo has been making the most money since 1986.
