Crisis on Infinite Earths was one of the biggest events in DC history. The storyline wrapped up many continuity problems; it saw the end of the DC Silver Age and the rise of what we know now as the Modern era. Many characters were killed, some ceased to exist.
All of this came at the hands of the Anti-Monitor, the ruler of the Anti-Universe. This monster was able to take on the likes of Earth-2 Superman and throw him down like a used rag doll. It was at the hands of the entire DCU and the sacrifice of Heroes and Villains alike that the Anti-Monitor fell. Yet, the Anti-Monitor is the source of all major Crises in the DC universe and this universal tyrant has made his way into the game of HeroClix.
The Anti-Monitor
The Anti-Monitor is the newest addition to the small number of colossal figures in the game of HeroClix. It stands nearly a foot tall, has glowing eyes and a glowing chest plate (battery operated), and may be the most powerful force in the game today. Similar to other colossals, you can choose to wield this powerful figure at three different levels: 600-point rookie, 800-point experienced and 1,000-point veteran. Each level is a bit different, but equally deadly in its environment.
At his veteran level the Anti-Monitor is armored at a 19 defense with impervious and, due to his Quintessence team ability, can't be outwitted. His defense stays consistently between 18 and 17 through most of the dial, finally dropping to lower numbers on his final two clicks. An opening 14 attack with psychic blast and 12 range means he's rarely going to miss, no matter where targets try to hide from the unstoppable 6 damage.
The Anti-Monitor also wields multi-attack, allowing him to make two attacks in one turn on multiple targets. If your opponent is able to damage him, then they'll have to contend with his special power:
Quote
ALL THE POWER AT MY COMMAND SHALL BE USED TO DESTROY YOU!
The Anti-Monitor can use Psychic Blast and Quake; when he uses Quake, do not replace his damage value.
Your opponent must now choose which is wiser: take the high ground and risk eating a ranged attack, or get up close and personal as Anti-Monitor does four damage and knockback to all those around him. And even when your opponent is able to contend with this monster, the Anti-Monitor can use:
Quote
I WILL NOT DIE UNTIL YOU DIE WITH ME!
Once per turn, the Anti-Monitor can use Exploit Weakness. At the end of the round, if no character opposing the Anti-Monitor was defeated or eliminated, roll 2d6 and subtract the Anti-Monitor's unmodified damage value, minimum result 1. Heal the Anti-Monitor of damage equal to the result.
At every level, the Anti-Monitor is able to heal himself at the end of his turn. His opponent will quickly become frustrated as the damage they dealt is reversed, and a near full-power Anti-Monitor stares them in the face.
The Anti-Monitor is a force unto himself (which is kind of the point). His consistent attack values and ability to deal damage make him a tyrant of the HeroClix grid. At every level he will give any team a run for their money and should be the team to beat in the week 11 Crisis events.
Even at full power the, Anti-Monitor did not come to comic storylines alone. He brought with him many villains from the Anti-Matter Universe, all with powers to rival the DCU's strongest heroes. To represent them, this Action Pack heralds the return of figures known as "generics." These are figures that are unnamed, and often will see play in multiples or as an entire army.
THUNDERER OF QWARD
The Weaponers and Thunderers of Qward are some of the most dangerous villains found in the anti-matter universe. Their ability to throw bolts of energy, called "qwa," that can hurt even Superman make them formidable indeed. In their HeroClix form, the Thunderer generic comes in at a well-packaged 50 points. Running Shot with 6 range makes him a dangerous mobile unit. This figure is a true team player as he is a flyer and can carry any ground non-giant or non-duo figure and bears three clicks of enhancement. The "soldier" keyword will allow this figure to find its way onto many theme teams, ranging from swarms of Thunderers to unlikely alliances with Deathstroke. However, it is their special power that really shines in the end:
Quote
QWA-BOLTS
Thunderer of Qward can use Energy Explosion. When Thunderer of Qward is given a ranged combat action, you can choose one of the following options: 1) Modify Thunderer of Qward's range value by his current unmodified damage value; or 2) damage from the attack is penetrating damage.
Most players will choose option two in order to deal penetrating damage through the toughest of defenses.
Shadow Demon
The flying Shadow Demon is a close-combat ball of fury with consistent 9 and 8 attack values. When it doesn't have Blades Claws Fangs, this Demon has Exploit Weakness, meaning it's capable of dishing out damage to the toughest of opponents. A high 17 defense and full dial of Super Senses means that 33% of the time your opponent will miss. And the Shadow Demon special power makes him even more deadly.
Quote
THE DARKNESS IS ALIVE!
Shadow Demon can use Plasticity, Phasing/Teleport, and Stealth.
This allows the Shadow Demon to go anywhere on the map and hide in hindering terrain, which should quickly frustrate opponents unable to target it with ranged attacks. The plasticity keeps your opponent in one place as the rest of your team swarms in to take out a key figure.
Both generics are well-packaged, cheap figs that add new flavors to the game. Both are very playable and capable of competing at a higher level of play environment of HeroClix.
Our Recommendation:
The Anti-Monitor action pack is a value for every HeroClix player or collector. It brings to the table a very competitive colossal figure and two generic figures that are a much welcome addition to any team. And that's not even mentioning the Crisis-dialed Pariah.
Yeah, I know it's been said in many ways and more times, but it bears repeating. How much happier would we have been if they'd put these two in Crisis instead, and put Psycho-Pirate and the Flash -- or maybe the Earth-2 Superman -- in the Action Pack? Much, much happier.
Man, reading your article made me shudder. It reminds me of when I read the Crisis on Infinite Earths story. How the Anti-Monitor just toyed with the heroes from different times and dimensions and seemed unbeatable. Kinda like I picture it being many a time when he's used in heroclix beginning 4/30/08. Man, this oughta be good.
Thanks,
Proverbs 3:5,6 Arkham Knight Clix - Oh Yeah, there coming!!
Good article, and really the most attractive/enticing presentation I've seen for the set... and that was without even really spotlighting the map, which is really the one item in the pack I'm most looking forward to.
