Not a thread about if you like OMD/BND or not. But considering the problems GL fans went through after the Emerald Twilight, I've been wondering if Spidey will have the same problems. Namely will BND go on for years like Hal as villain did, slowly becoming the accepted standard for the incoming fans, as older ones adjust or become diehard in their hatred of the new direction. Then perhaps years later some hot writer will come along with the juice to undo it all and somehow bring back the MJ/Peter marriage and all it entails. Thus leading to the same problems of alienating some of the newer readers who never read married Spidey.
OMD/BND will be undone at some point, it's just the nature of comics. Whether it's 1-2 years or 10-12 years could greatly affect how the readers see it though.
I think when it gets undone, it might suffer this problem, depending how long it takes. If they undo it within a year or two, old readers might come back, and new ones will likely stick with it for a little bit at least. But if they wait 5 or 10 years, they will have alienated all the old readers past the point of return, and they will be alienating the new readers on top of it. But, to be fair to Spider-Man, this has already happened.
The internets weren't around back then, but I imagine there were fans who thought Spidey never should have gotten married, and got angry, and gave up the book. And then 20 years later, they undid that. But those readers are already lost. And OMD/BND alienates the newer readers who came on after the marriage, myself included. Any time there's a major change to character or continuity, this will happen. It's not limited to Hal/Kyle, but that is one of the best and longest lasting examples.
People gave up Superman when he went Blue. People gave up on Robin when it went from Dick to Jason, and then Tim, and then Tim to Stephanie. People probably gave up X-Men when Morrison came on and made all those changes. Others gave it up when they undid all of Morrison's changes. And Exiles - how many people gave that up because of Claremont, but would go back in an instant if it got good again.
HeroClix needs more Goblin.
Acceptable in such forms as Green, Grey, Demo, Hob, Ultimate, and "Menace."

Don't give me false hopes here... Nothing I want more in comics then for Exiles to be as good as it once was again.

The problem is that a lot of new players come from the "race generation" they want to define their worth by the "skill" they posses in playing a game of toy soldiers.

What's extra sad about Exiles is how easy it seemed to be for the writers to produce good stories with. It's probably Judd Winnick's best work. Hell even Chuck Austen wrote some decent stories on the book.
If Chuck Austen and Judd Winnick (who really isn't a bad writer, he just doesn't know how to write an established character...which DC expects him to do all the time) can succeed with the book, why can't Chris Claremont?[/tangental rant]
I think this is a different situation, though. I think it could organically just end up back to how it was pre-OMD. I mean, the "old" style is just Peter and MJ being married. "Undoing" what's been done isn't that hard, and shouldn't really alienate anyone if handled slowly and properly. Just have Peter and MJ rekindle a relationship, say some winking nod along the lines of "I dunno why, but this feels so familiar," and have them get married again. If done organically this could potentially satisfy anyone. It just essentially retreads what's already happened, but that was really the whole point of BND anyways, right?

Just a new way to reuse old continuity.
You'd think Ultimate Spider-Man would have already been satisfying that itch.
To answer the OP though, I don't think so. Pete and MJ being unmarried and the other *un*changes wrought by OMD/BND aren't as jarring as replacing the character with a whole new version.
Sorry, I learned my lesson with the clone saga. Stopped reading then and never looked back. I am happy to read anything that was made before that, but that is it. That being said, anytime a change is made like this that stays around, you will have the two factions. DC just made alot of people happy with the return of Barry Allen, although going back and changing things back to how it was before OMD would never happpen, right?
I hate to say it but I think Marvel just hates marriages all together.
I think the only one they have let stay together so far was Reed and Sue (and it even looked like they were trying to break that up during the Civil War) and I believe it looks like they are going to separate Storm and Black Panther again soon.
Believe it or not, a character who is married can still have A LOT of adventures while attached to a significant other........ it's sad that writers felt bogged down by the marriage when it is common place in the real world.
Quite frankly Spider-Man is now annoying and whiney to me since I m past that teenage point in my life. It seems like they just had the character take a tremendous step backwards and it just feels all stupid (especially the forced dialogue they put into the stories to PROVE that he is now single). Ugh if I see him mention one more money problem this soon in the series I am going to hurl (I still flip through the trades my friend buys to see whats going on.)
I feel alienated because now Peter does not speak to me anymore as an individual since I have moved on from that point in my life and I myself and married and have a REAL job as an elementary teacher (something I DID have in common with Spider-Man as a character).
I really hope they bring back the marriage. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth that Mephisto seemingly won, Spidey ended up being a selfish jerk (tell me his Aunt would not kick his butt if she found out he sacrificed his LOVE and his unborn daughter to save her old butt), and tainted himself as a hero for evermore until they undo that horrid story!
The least the writers can do is admit that OMD sucked as a story and idea sucked.....
I'm going to hit him really, really hard with a big green boxing glove............ I'm kidding. - Hal Jordan
Hopefully they keep the new direction of Spider-man going for a long time. One More Day wasn't very good and used the "magic button" #### for changing up character. But since then the book has been fantastic and enjoyable. Anyone not reading the book now is not a Spider-Man fan or an idiot, because right now its one of the best books on the market. I realize most people on here are too young to remember Peter Parker who wasn't married, but changing that up (and I do wish they'd done it a different way) brought back a lot of what hte character had lost - not worryingabout money, his job, having someone he can completely trust and depend on - very "un-Spider-Man"
And those were things I didn't even realize had been lost until I started reading BND, I didn't realize how mundane Peter Parket/Spider-Man had become, the character and stories had basically fallen into a formula, and his support cast had basically become husks for him to have the same interactions with over and over again. I bet if I hit those people who don't like BND and the stories that have come after on the head with a mallet, make them forget One More Day and told them Peter and MJ just got a divorce and people don't remember Peter is Spider-Man because of the Skrulls, most of the negativity about the book would go away.
In terms of the books changing, probably not as long as the current Editors are there.

Theres only one Return, and it ain't of the King, its of the Jedi.

You've had this argument before with others. Grow up and understand that your opinion is not always right when it differs with others. Nor is it an excuse to insult them.
I hate the current stories of Spider-Man. I grew up reading Spidey being married to MJ. Hell Sam Raimi did everything he could do to make MJ the love of Peters life. Kirsten Dunst did everything she could do to ruin the character. Mary Jane is not a anorexic, strawberry blonde, old lady clothes wearing #####. Thank you. I don't even want to pick up Marvel books anymore. Spidey was the last beacon of hope for me and now he sucks. It's obvious that Bendis hates the BND stuff too since the Spidey in SI is almost completely different then the one in the normal Spidey books. Oh and having a redhead superhero named Jackpot is just a slap in the face.

Heh.
The Exiles format is very appealing. It's matching up the charm of the What If? stories with an interesting backstory, matched to the Marvel multiverse, and pretty much whatever characters the writer wants to use.

Uh, because Claremont hasn't been a good writer in a long, long, long time?
