I think I read once about purple rings on the WizKids website but don't remember where it was.
I have 3 figs now that have purple rings.
They are Origins promo Batman, Sin Nick Fury, and now Colossal Boy from the Giants set.
What's the reason for these?
What's the tourney rulings?
Are there alot of purple ring figs? I've never paid much attention before until I started getting them.
Colossal Boy from the Giants set has this other marking printed on it's base that I've never seen on any other fig purple ring or not.
I don't have any other Giants from that set to compare it to.
It's a white oval directly to the right of the charcter# with a "CE" inside it.
Anybody shed some light?
Plus, how can you tell the rarity of a fig that has a purple ring wether it's a unique or not?
The purple ring figures were promotional figures.
Colossal Boy and Atom Eve were tournament prizes, 2 Armor Wars Wolverines and 2 Batman figures were FCBD figures and, all of the others, to my knowledge, were participation prizes at pre-releases. They were ruled to be not tournament legal, even though with the exception of a few (FCBD Wolverines and Prox X, perhaps a couple others) they were exactly the same as the figures available in the boosters.
Malger is right. Except for a few printing errors (number of lightning bolts on Iron Monger for instance) the purple rings were the same as the normal ring figures except for those promo batman and promo wolverines. Purple rings used to be considered highly collectable since there were so few given away at pre-releases (there were purple ring oracles and KC flashes going for $50+), but I think the novelty has since worn off. Technically they are not tourney legal but I never enforced that at my venue. Now it is a mute point. Play ON!

iirc that marking stands for the "Collectors Edition" and is placed where the usual Set's symbol is supposed to be. I think it's the same on all the giants from that set.

The FCBD Batman from Origins had a different dial than the regular Unique that had the same sculpt. The FCBD Batman from Icons had the same dial as the Experienced Batman from that set though.
Also, I believe the purple ring version of Crystal had an extra target as well.
Purple ring figures are promotional and are not tournament legal in standard events. Where house rules are allowed (which would be ll events now, wouldn't it?) most venues allowed them to be played. It never made a lot of sense anyway: "here's this cool figure, but you can't play it"?
