There are literally thousands of HeroClix figures out there, yet it always amazes me the small number of figures that players put on a pedestal. Why? Is it the sculpt? The rarity? The supposedly “awesome” dial? I can’t say I really know for sure. But what I do know is that these following five figures are highly overrated, and I wish people would stop pretending that they’re so great (they’re really not)...
Greetings HeroClix fans. The Le here again with a new article that focuses on some pretty mediocre figures. Let’s get to it: The Top 5 Overrated Figures in HeroClix (in no particular order):
Crisis DARKSEID
This is all I get for 210 points? He’s certainly frontloaded, but that always makes it bad for the long game. He won’t be able to stand a balanced team, that’s for sure, and his maneuverability is severely lacking. Throw out a couple low point tie-up figures and Darkseid is looking pretty vulnerable. I’d take the 200 point MAN OF STEEL instead, and save 10 points. Heck, the 181 point Icons Vet Darkseid isn’t looking too bad!
Ultimates Thor
Oh please. People were gushing over this overrated 186-point Viking because of the 5 damage and long range. So what? He’s got some early maneuverability and high attack values, but have you seen that stinker of a defense? 16 to 12 in sixty seconds (Nicholas Cage would be so proud). It’s certainly nice that he has the Ultimates TA and that big 10 range, but he’s just a lame beat-stick. No thanks, I’ll save 105 points and take the Secret Invasion Thor Girl instead (Heck, at 81 points, I’ll take two Thor Girls, leaving me 24 points left over for some feats).
M&M Apocalypse
Now here’s a guy who has a somewhat opposite problem to Ultimate Thor – he’s got nearly a full dial of color but nowhere to go. Three clicks of impervious isn’t bad, but once he’s off that first click then he’s in for a beating. Sorry, but regeneration just isn’t good enough to save this dial. He’s great for long range though, which doesn’t make sense to me since he was always so much more dangerous up close. His mish-mash of powers just doesn’t make a lot of sense… Super Strength on the first click? Really? You’re practically forced to push him to get into his better clicks. Overall the dial is a mess and that 250 points is going to seriously limit your teams. I’d rather play with the 241 point SuperNova DOOM (ie Beyonder Doom) since he gets Outwit immunity and free Willpower (and a much more sensible dial).
Green Scar
I’ve seen this bad boy used by many different players, and he’s always gotten his butt handed to him. His movement is where he suffers the most, as he’s often the target of ranged “shoot and scoot” attacks. He certainly has a strong opening click or two, but then falters quite a bit in the middle. I am not a fan of regeneration, and even less of a fan here with only two clicks of it. Worst of all, we’re looking at 230 freaking points! That being said, I am not totally opposed to taking him off of this list; his dial looks excellent on paper, but he just seems to falter in every game I have seen him played. I’ve personally had very good results with New Guy Night Rampaging Hulk instead – it will save you 102 points and give you a better piece of mind.
Lamp Batman
For 120 points, he could be better. He should be better. He has a high defense (better than Ultimate Thor!), which will keep him alive, but he’s completely built for close combat attacks. Why would you do this to us Wizkids? You give this man lots of outwit, perplex, and stealth (via TA), and you slap Charge and Flurry on him? Really? And that “Gargoyles” Special Ability is only useful on outdoor maps that actually have elevated terrain. Do me a favor and pick up the Justice League Batman for 75 points – Out of the Shadows is still better than this lamp junk.
Honorable Overrated Mentions:
-E2 SUPERMAN (Who would pay $100 for this piece of junk?).
-Avengers STARDUST (Good attacks, but erratic defense and damage).
-Sinister Nick Fury (I’ll save some points and take the Secret Invasion GOLIATH instead, thank you very much).
Not trying to be negative or confrontational, but I actually disagree with this entire list. These are all awesome figures, incredibly powerful for their points.
All these figures are reasonably costed (or maybe even under-costed in some cases).
While it is true that almost all figures in HeroClix can be good or bad depending on who is playing them and how they're played, all figures are not created equal. True; it is not necessarily "easy" to play a high-cost, tent-pole figure. You can't just walk into the middle of a map and start owning people. You need good strategy because you don't have a lot of room for error if your big guy goes down. However, some of these figures (like the ones on your "overrated" list) make it a lot easier than others!
Having read several of your articles, I have to wonder if you've actually played competitive HeroClix with the various characters you pump and dump.

Actually in 300 pts. the article is spot on. I doubt you'll see any competitive play with these characters in a teams roster.
-Massu
for 300 pt matches i agree with this list for 400 i do not. Thor has won me loads of games back in the day. he was hard to deal with, get him some perplex/outwit support coupled with the U ta he hit first and hard. Apoc and chase bats is all i really agree with.
Thor ain't what he used to be, but back in the day when alpha-strike ruled and most clix were semi-worthless after a solid hit, here you have a guy who was both an exception to that (look at the whole-dial potential for damage) and was exquisitely designed to deliver that crippling blow to anybody, stealth or not. And when he was King, stealth was far less beatable than it is now.
Darkseid, while not great naked, is really nasty when played well. He requires a little bit of planning, unlike many tentpole favorites, but he's quite good.
Green Scar is absolutely amazing! i have not seen this piece lose yet... And no one can say Ultimate Thor is bad. That might be my favorite piece!! Darkseid sux, Apoc sux, and Batman is batman! a chase figure is played just for that reason!!
u want an over rated piece, Crisis nightwing! his defense is very nice, and pushing him to get the perplex might be ur best bet... but he is not a good piece... he get demolished everytime i play him. Gotham team, Titan team, Outsider team... no good...
Also, sinister Nick Fury is godly push once and sit on a turret!! And again for Green Scar, i land on that 9 move, 12 attack, imperv/willpower, every single time! he rarely gets hit past that!

I might believe this could be top 5 over priced figs (maybe) .. but overrated ? Really ?
To start .. to be overrated you would have to be first highly rated .. and i dont know anyone that thinks Apocalypse is a highly rated Fig. Most people I have talked to think he sux.
Ultimate Thor ..I admit alot of people Have touted his virtues, but im pretty sure most of that was done when the charecter was released and he was a beast in a world of crappy clix. I dont think anyone calls him the end all be all since Heroclix 2.0
Greenscar is an expensive hulk.. and Rampaging maybe the better option ... but I dont think anyone lifts greenscar above the status of Rampaging when evaluating there clix. Besides This guy is a monster. His mobility is low , but he can be TKed or carried .. and at 230 .. you can fit support in and if he gets into hand to hand he destroys.
"Lamp post" batman is a highly rated piece .. but i think alot of it comes from the Mystique of being a chase and from having a great sculpt. Is he worth the points maybe not .. and is Oots better .. probably .. Is he Overrated ... Not from a sculpt standpoint ...
Your probably right about Darkside .. I havent played him enough to call hime overrated... and i admit alot of people say the OMEGA BEAMS power makes him great... so ...
Got to kind of admire someone who will say stuff that he knows will be hugely unpopular. Rep for that.
The only time I've lost, using that Darkseid, was when I was up against another Darkseid, used by a better player. So I tend to agree with him being awesome, though I keep thinking, being Darkseid, he should be MORE awesome.
I've seen it go both ways with Green Scar.
I've only seen Apocalypse used once, and I destroyed him with little trouble, so my experience would tend to agree with you.
I've never actually seen the Lampbat.
I don't think I've ever seen that Ultimate Thor win, so I can go along with that.
He won’t be able to stand a balanced team, that’s for sure, and his maneuverability is severely lacking. Throw out a couple low point tie-up figures and Darkseid is looking pretty vulnerable.
Just walk away Darkseid starts out with phasing.
Also Nick Fury and a squad of SHIELD AGENTS and the Power Pack will rock your boat.
