Once per game, choose one - the character has the damage symbol; or the character modifies its defense value by +1 against ranges combat attacks. The chosen effect lasts until the end of the game.
I get the sense when reading this that the intention of this feat is that it is not optional, like the carrying aspect of Sidekick or the healing of Life Model Decoy.
Unfortunately, like those feats, this feat doesn't include any text preventing it from being canceled.
The "has the " definitely grants possession of the , but if the feat is canceled, then that would stop the possession, too.
In other words, I could assign this to Hercules and give him the symbol. After that, I could cancel the feat for an action in order to carry him. Then, when my opponent tries to shoot him as he's looming over Namor's head, I could cancel it again to hide behind Namor. Then on the next action I can let it stay on in order to prevent my opponent from TKing him out to a position where he can be seen.
As written, all of that is totally legal, but my gut tells me that this is probably not the intention.
So...is this supposed to be one of the non-optional feats?
I dunno, there's a couple ways to look at it I guess.
If you cancel the feat, does it override the effect of "...until the end of the game"?, if so, then when you lose the effect would it stay lost? If the feat is cancelled then returns, then the feat could still be in play but you wouldn't be able to choose the effect again since you already chose it earlier.

No, you already chose which part (being a giant or gaining the DV bonus), so when the feat is no longer canceled, it is still whatever it was you originally chose to use.

I'd say that the effect either ends or doesn't end (just my take on it, I'm no feat expert or anything). If the effect ends then I'd say it's done, if not then I'd say they remain even if the feat card isn't active.

The effect (gaining the ) is generated by the feat.
If the feat is canceled, there is nothing to generate the effect.
Thus, canceling the feat would stop the effect.
If you cancel ICwO for some reason, you would no longer have the +1 or the power gained from Oracle.

So, if the effect is cancelled then it wouldn't come back up again, right? Or is it considered to be merely subdued?
So you could cancel the feat then have it come back up again later, then if you hadn't chosen you could choose, otherwise the effect is lost.
Is that correct?

Considering that Skrull-Pym can pop in and out of giant-hood, why shouldn't this be optional. It's not like the Particle use tends to be a permanent effect in comics.
How is this different from canceling a Special Power that grants the Giant symbol?

The big difference is that if you cancel an SP, it is gone until the end of the turn.
A feat is canceled on an action-to-action basis.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking here.
The effect would come back when the card is no longer canceled, but like a Wild Card copying Ultimate X-Men, then copying something else, then copying UXM again, it would not get to rechoose which part of the feat it is using.

If you had previously made the choice, you'd still have that same choice.
If you had not already made the choice, you still hae the option to make the choice.
I look at the choice like Endurance tokens. It's there for good regardless of what happens to the feat after that. Super Adaptoid can have three tokens on Endurance, then lose Earthbound. He will keep the three tokens on Endurance and if he gains EB again, they're still there. Similarly the choice is "on" the feat and will remain even if the card is somehow out of the picture temporarily.

As of now, it IS optional. For only 6 points, though, and the tone I get from the wording on the card, I get the impression that it was supposed to be non-optional. I'm just trying to find out if that might have been the case.

Skrull-Pym has a power that continually generates the effect, the card requires a one-time trigger. If the card had said "This effect continues while this card is in play...", then I'd see it differently.

Look at Force Field...
"FORCE FIELD†
Cost: 10
Prerequisite: Barrier, Defend, Energy Shield/Deflection, or Telekinesis
Choose a character with a power that reduces damage. The character gains Toughness."
By your reasoning, you would then say that FF creates the ongoing effect of having Toughness once Barrier (or one of them) appears. As a result, countering that Barrier wouldn't remove the Toughness.

We know it doesn't work like that.
Between this reasoning/precedent and the actual wording of Pym Particles, I agree with Harpua's conclusions.

I agree with Harpua in feeling that this card was "intended" to be non-optional but was incorrectly created such that it is.
I hope Norm can hand down an errata before this gets out of hand. 6 points to become a giant is fine - but not if you get all of the benefits of giant-hood without any of the drawbacks.
