can someone tell me for once an for all? penance...
does he deal damage if he's knocked onto his Pain is my power click? an if he does does that mean he doesn't when he's KOed off of them? is it one or the other? before or after? or can it be both?
I have heard many versions about this...but my guess is that he doesn't deal damage when knocked into pain but he does do damage if he is ko'ed while Pain shows on his dial. My guess it that the ability activates at the resolve of the action so you miss the timing if its not shown on the dial when the adjacent figure does damage.
I always thought that unless a power said otherwise it only worked when it was showing on the dial.
In this case I would say that if Penance takes damage from an attack when that power is showing then the attacker would suffer the damage. But not if you land on it since the damage was already taken before it showed up.
I could be wrong though. I'm sure one of the authorities on the matter will be by shortly.
Quote what you're asking about it. It helps to get an accurate answer.

If the power isn't showing when he takes the damage then the attacker doesn't take any damage from it. When his dial is clicked to "Pain Is My Power" from taking damage, he's already taken the damage by the time it shows up so the attacker doesn't take any damage from it.
The power has to be showing before you click the dial for him taking damage in order for the power to cause the attacker to take damage.

But that's just my honest opinion
This is the correct opinion. Take a look at Penance and compare the wording to Mystics:

The bolded text shows the only differences:
1. It specifies the character (though I suppose technically it didn't need to, stylistically, special powers always do).
2. The attack must come from an adjacent opposing character (so splash damage from a friendly Energy Explosion would not activate this, even if it was an adjacent friendly Sharpshooter).
3. The retaliation damage is 2 insetad of 1.
So it works just like Mystics - so you take the damage if the power is showing when you hit him, even if that damage KO's him.
