BL Kal-L vs. BL Martian Manhunter: who should I choose?
Okay, so my ultimate goal is to acquire all 4 of the Black Lantern chase figures and the Black Lantern object. Right now I have Black Hand and Nekron.
I'm in the process of completing some sales that will enable me to add another of the Black Lanterns to my collection. So the question then becomes which one of the two should I choose?
I am turning to you guys and gals for help.
Part of the problem is that I think Martian Manhunter is a little more playable due to being a LOT cheaper points wise and has opening HSS (which granted could be moot if facing Kid Zoom). I think he compliments the other two BLs I have quite nicely with move and attack, HSS, and indomitable. His "Decaying Embrace" SP is quite handy as well. Plus he is a little cheaper dollar wise as well so it wouldn't quite deplete my funds as much acquiring him. But...........
This may be my most realistic shot at acauiring Kal for a while. MM's price may dip a little but I don't think it'll drop drastically for a long time. Kal-L has indomitable and some sick damage potential but points wise is a much bigger investment. Plus Kal-L only has a 4 range and his HSS doesn't show up until the back half of his dial. Kal does have higher defense on average and has an extra click of life over John.
So for those of you who have them and have played them or against them, which should I choose?

I have heard nothing but good things about Kal L except for his point cost. Well, and of course how much he costs to buy. Through some shrewd trading and buying I was able to collect the four BL characters and the actual Lantern, but have not had the opportunity to face any of them yet!!!
BEWARE !!!!!!!!!!! .... The Big Red Cheese !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously I like Martian Manhunter more and if you want to play one of them right off the bat I would go with him. Although Kal-L is fun and scary on that first click, but as you stated costly.
Who does your gut tell you to buy? What style of team do you like to build? Do you have a certain fondness for either character in the comics? What does you mom think of this choice? What would Jesus do?
These are the questions to ask yourself whenever buying a Black Lantern figure.

personality i think his second clix is better. that flurry with free FB is just nasty. so i say bite the bullet and get Kal-L. you said it yourself that manhunter's price will drop later.
I don't know who's getting their Kal-L's 'crushed', but i've played mine 4 times and not lost with him. In one game he healed something like 12 clicks of damage taking out opposing figures.

You know, that's the funny thing. if I went off of my first instict I think i'd pick Manhunter. But that's because he seems so playble and like he doesn't need quite as much support to get right into the fray as Kal. which seems to complement Black Hand and Nekron a lot.
But characterwise I'd have to go with Kal. My all time favorite character is Superman, which definitely gives him a leg up. I loved Kal in Blackest Night JSA and Blackest Night Superman. He such a beast in those! And in Infinite Crisis it was so awesome to see him and Clark fight it out with Prime.
as for my playstyle I like to try and build teams that are competitive but thematic and try to have a balance between the two. I pass on the cheese.
My fear is that if I pass up on Kal now it may be a LONG time before I have another chance to get him. But I don't want to get him and regret passing on Manhunter who seems to require a lot less finesse to use.
Either way, no matter who I pick it'll likely be some time before I get the other one.
I haven't asked my mom. But I think she would say Kal L since it's superman. Of course once she found out that both zombies...well, she'd still probably say Kal. lol.

Martian Manhunter is good, but he's no Kal-L.
My local judge used his Kal-L in a three way match...
Yeah, he got dogpiled.
MM seemed to have better "staying power", I'd go for MM over Kal-L.

I kinda agree on the second click being a lot more brutal than the first since you can deal out so much potential damage and wreck one big dog or smash two lesser ones.
and it's nice to read that although Kal-L does occassionally get crushed it seems to be that it takes quite a swarm of folks to put him down.

Just remember that both will come down in price and there will always be more out there for you to get so don't worry about that. It sounds like you're going to get Kal L. I have all four of the BL's and they are quite fun (except for Nekron).

Yeah between Black Hand, a Black Lantern, and Kal-L's own healing power he's healing three clix with every K.O.

Yeah, if I can find the right deal I am leaning towards Kal L.
I've only played Nekron once, and maybe it was the team he was on, but I really liked him. I thought he'd get shredded but he actually punished the oppossing team pretty handily. My opponent was afraid to get to close to him, but couldn't crack his defense at range. when i pushed to click 2 and got that pulse wave SP, then the pain really rained down. Of course I think Blue Lantern Flash and Black Hand had a lot to do with that too. lol.

They both rock, and having played them all I'd say Kal-L if you play feats. With Auto Regen and a Black Lantern object Kal-L sticks around unless you just let him get dogpiled in one round.

If you're picking up all 4 chase figs I'd go for Kal-L first. As a Superman character he will be the harder find in the coming future. MM is a more playable fig but in the long run I'd still bank on a Superman.
