Stuck at last, stuck at last, thank Typhon almighty, stuck at last! (With apologies to the great Dr King.)
Welcome Realmsers!
While talking with Tony (Typhon) at GenCon this year, I told him of our need for a stickied "How do you store your 'clix" thread. After much badgering, he told me, "You write it, I'll sticky it."
So, here it is.
In this thread, I'd like folks to post their methods of storing HeroClix. Not just "I use boxes/tackle trays/garbage bags" kind of ideas, but do you sort by team? By Keyword? By astrological sign? No idea is too silly. After all, it works for you, doesn't it? [EDIT] B11A2 reminded me: how you transport teams to your games is also a good subject to address here.
There are a few guidelines, of course. First, please keep this thread ON TOPIC. Don't groan with "yet another storage thread!" comments. For it is my hope that this will be the last--and with your help, the best--such thread. People who groan at the lack of such a sticky are precisely why I started this project. Those people should be satisfied now, and have no cause for griping.
Conversely, keep any "about time!" comments out. While I appreciate any "thank you" statements, this is not the place. Besides, Typhon gets full credit for putting up with my tirade, and for letting me do this. Also, this is for ALL players, not just my own self-satisfaction.
Second, keep it civil. While you may think another storage system might be laughable, keep this in mind: someone else is laughing at yours. Besides, you may just learn something, and store your collection better for it. Keep an open mind.
Lastly, posting pictures is always helpful. I can't myself, because I'm just not that clever. But there's plenty who can, and is definitely encouraged.
For most of my collection, I've graduated from one box system to another, and I think I've found the final version. I use 880-count card boxes, and sort by sets. Usually, two sets fit into one box, though I don't have complete sets of most releases.
I do have more than a few sub-sets, though; mostly generics, or Special Teams. The big armies of Generics are in other 880-count boxes, though I've found a two-row box to be pretty effective for "opposite" armies: Cops/Thugs, SHIELD/HYDRA, X-Men/LEGION and so on.
For smaller "armies", I have 550-count boxes for the smaller Generic or Special collections--Doombots/M-11s/Spider-Slayers, Green Lantern Corps (and enemies), Archers and EuroClix/BPRD/Invincible for examples.
Like a ton of collectors, I use the ever-useful Plano tackle boxes for several types of figures. Two trays of un-"retired" flyers for DC, another two for Marvel; these are mostly sorted alphabetically, and makes finding a particular Modern Age flyer easier. ("Retired"/Golden Agers are in their set-boxes.) Another eight or ten trays are for my Uniques, LEs and Super-Rares. These are grouped by themes, mostly. Superman Ally in one slot, Super-Enemy in another. Some themes are kinda weak, I'll admit, but like I said, it works for me.
Getting teams to the game, I have a nice tackle-tote I found at a sporting goods store. It came with three mini-trays, designed to hold fishing lures and suchlike, but I've found they hold 'clix rather beautifully. They have adjustable slots like the ever-popular Planos, and I even snagged a fourth tray to help sort things. One has my pile-o-dice and some Special Objects, one holds the night's team and so on. There's a decent-sized open area to hold over-sized figures, snacks and other handy items. VERY handy with space!
For my traders, I have a large red gym bag. I actually gave away all of my old fodder to a guy who's lost his collection in a house-fire, but here's my system for once-and-future. I separated all of the figs by universe, one DC, one Marvel, one Indy, and a final box for Uniques/LEs/SRs, as well as cards. Finding the flyer to match the dial is something of an adventure, but not too terrible a hassle. When I first became Judge, I brought the Big Red Bag to the Venue, and let new players pillage for anything they wanted, garbage and gold alike. Still do, to a degree, though the locals have what they're looking for, mostly, so the bag doesn't see much action.
Thanks to others--OH YEAH--CARDS! For character cards, I have another 880-count cardboard box to hold character cards, sorted by Universe (DC/Marvel/Other), then (mostly) alphabetical by character name. For Feats & BFCs, I have a three-ring binder at the Venue, sorted by set and number. These are "open-use", for anyone to borrow for the night.
Thanks to B11A2: I did find a nice travel case at....Lowes? Depot?....for about $25. It's got two sides that lock in and fold out, that fit just about any figure you'd like. Use one side for your team, one side for "other"--dice, tokens, special markers and so on. There's also side bins that slide out for whatever else you'll need. I've been looking long at hard at it for my own use, but don't have the money just yet. (And it's hard to argue against the sheer volume of my current box, to hold dinner.) Look in the toolbox aisle of your store of choice--Lowes, Wal-Mart or Dave's Discount--and see what you like. Mind you, this particular one is for travel to games; it is NOT recommended for permanent storage. (heh)--Okay, so I didn't get that specific bin after all. But the advice still works.
I really need to find a new efficient carrying case with which to organize my pieces. I'm waiting until Watchmen and Web of Spider-Man to determine what to use, if anyone has any great suggestions, I'll be sure to be watching this thread for them!
I keep all my usable clix in my display case (in album).
For my trade fodder, I store them in the Bait Box Multi Tackle Organizer that I get from Walmart (D 9.6" x W 14.4" x H 9.6"). It has 4 containers with removable slots for those longer figures (except some of the newer clix don't fit Fenris Wolf type).
I store them by Set in numerical order.
My buddy on here rollinsolo has about 7 of these he keeps his in. Not sure how he sorts them.
I have a variety of tackle boxes, but I think the ones to get nowadays, with the larger-sized figures that are coming out, are the ones that Wal-Mart carries that are little deeper than the ones you usually get in the drawer sets. I'm thinking of getting a plastic drawer system to store all the loose boxes I've got. Need to free up a closet for an incoming baby.
I sort by set, and label the box as to what is in it. Most of the time you can fit a whole set in a single box (especially if you go through and cull the figures you never play with or that have been rendered obsolete). I used to sort by team ability and then by set for the figures without TAs, but that finally became too cumbersome.
That's for the bulk of my collection. I've also got a handy travel tackle box bag that holds several boxes worth of my favorite figures along with maps, calculator, pens, tourney cards, etc., that I take with me when I play. I've got a tourney box that holds my current team(s) plus all the dice, tokens, timer, 3D objects, feats, battlefield conditions, and other stuff that I need to play.
Oh, and for character cards, I found that they fit perfectly in those 9-slot baseball card sleeves, so I just got a binder and a bunch of sheets and put them in order of set.
And of course Sentinels, Starro, and Dark Phoenix all go on the top bookshelf.
I store mine pretty much like flakbait. I use tackle boxes that I fit in to cloth carriers. I need to get more for the upcoming set, and then I plan on storing the ones that i am not currently using and swap them out of the carrier for the ones I am using. I get mine from here with free shipping.
I store them not by set, but by teams/themes to make team set up easier. And within those I try to put characters that work together in the same slot, or near one another like Gambit/Rogue, Domino/Cable or Spidey/Blackcat for example.
I too put my cardboard in a binder with cardholders, and I try to sort these by likely combinations. Examples: Maneuver, Lunge, Vault or Repulsor Shield, Protected, Fortitude.
I keep the B/F/C's in the front, and the feats/ATA's in the back. The character cards are grouped together by team/theme here as well in the middle of the binder.
I just bought my 7th one this past weekend. I like how thin they are and how they have a nice handle. Also, you can connect two of them together from the locking mechanism on the back of them. It's $5 at Wal-Mart, and it works well with all kinds of dividers.
Oh, and for character cards, I found that they fit perfectly in those 9-slot baseball card sleeves, so I just got a binder and a bunch of sheets and put them in order of set.
I also keep my cards in 9-slot sleeves in a binder.
Character cards by set in numerical order.
Cardboard is by Type (Feats, BFC, Bystanders, Objects) and are in Alphabetical order.
For storage at home I have the upper section of a buffet & hutch (thusly the hutch) with glass doors. Left side is DC, right side is Marvel. INDY and mods take up most of the bottom shelf. My generics are store in a completely separate, smaller, cabinet.
Now, said hutch is also currently no longer big enough for my collection (which is sad, because I downgraded about a year and a half ago), so I managed to get shoeboxes on sale. Each plastic shoebox holds plenty of figures, but I've limited them to two sets in each so that it's still relatively easy to find the piece I want.
Like others, I keep my character cards in a 9-card sleeve binder, alphabetically. Eventually I may do the same for my Feats & BFC's.
All of my tokens, objects, LoS'er, terrain markers, and dice are in a carry case similar to this. The one I have has some removable dividers and it's what I transport my teams in when it's tournament time.

They hold a lot of figures, with the removable dividers I can fit in the giants and such, and they're stackable. I also have one that I use just to hold my dice, tokens, 3-D markers/effects/objects, etc.
I get them at K-Mart.
For my cards, I put them in plastic sleeves and store them alphabetically in card boxes. One for Marvel and one for DC.
Well, I am barely organized. Each set ( and I try to be a completest ) is in it's own container. The container itself has been different over the years and the clix are still mostly in their original containers. I started with tackle boxes but could never keep a complete set in one tackle box so I moved to......... ziplock bags. Yay me. Clix started cutting their way out of the bags so I moved to cheap (walmart) storage bins. I keep all character cards with their appropriate set and all others in a box. I use a double sided (one DC one Marvel) red tackle box for travel to games or tournies ( no more Booleyb, shame on you ). I have a D&D token box that I use for my Heroclix tokens ( magic tokens ). Yep I know; I rule and have the best setup.
