A friend of mine told me that Nightcrawler can attack an immobile object (he cannot destory it) then carry it with him on the map.

It does not say that the target has to be character. Will this actually work or is someone bending the rules?

That works just fine.
You could move Barrier tokens this way too if you want.

I did this with my opponents Kinetic Accelerator one game.

TK'd Nightcrawler out 8, he ran up, snagged the Accelerator and brought it back to my side of the map.

The expression on my opponents face was priceless.

this could be an interesting way of maximizing area denial objects (aerial baffler, hydrant...) or character disruptors (shield disruptor). Probably wouldn't work on the separation field generator, or does this not count as carrying to the point he could actually move the separation field generator?

it does not count as carrying. He can move the separation field generator.

Nothing prevents you from attacking Barrier tokens you placed. So you can do it to Barrier tokens anyone placed.

Do you mean, can Nightcrawler pull blocking terrain around with him? No. Page 5 of the Player's Guide:

"Game effects which would allow a figure to relocate terrain may not be used on terrain printed on the map."

Really, this rule is necessary for sanity. Imagine how confusing the map would get if he could!
