The DEXCON 15 HeroClix Worlds Qualifier Championship
Hi everyone!
I'd like to introduce myself here at HCRealms. I am Vincent Salzillo, president of Double Exposure, Inc.
It is my pleasure to be hosting a Worlds Qualifier Championship at our flagship convention, DEXCON 15.
This is the first time I'm posting on this board, but I've been reading it for the last two weeks, and I thought it might be a good time for me to answer some questions. Note that I cannot answer questions about the tournament formats and prizes and stuff that WizKids has under control, but I can certainly discuss DEXCON, the hotel, Morristown and what you guys should expect when you come to the convention.
In this introductory post, I'm going to answer some questions that I saw around the HCRealms boards. Then I'll try to answer whatever you guys throw at me!
1) "What's a DEXCON?"
DEXCON is a National Gaming Convention. It is what we call a PURE gaming convention, meaning that it does not focus on any other aspect of fandom, such as Anime, comic books, media, etc. By that classification, it is one of the largest gaming conventions in the country. It has been run since 1992 (always in New Jersey) and is home to over 30 U.S. National Championships (most board games), and the largest independent publishing track in the country. Back in the 90's, when CCGs were raging, Double Exposure used to run massive 100+ player tournaments of Magic, L5R, V:TES, Shadowfist, etc. we are all thrilled to be working with WizKids for the first time in many years to host a giant HeroClix Championship.
2) "Isn't DEXCON a LARP and Role Playing Convention?"
DEXCON is going to host 48 LARP events and hundreds of tabletop Role Playing events. That is HUGE by gaming convention standards, but only one aspect of a Master Schedule which will have over 1,000 individual events (and will be published in its entirety tonight, June 19th, at 9:00PM at the Double Exposure web site, http://www.dexposure.com).
DEXCON has eight tracks of gaming: LARPs, NAGA & RPGA Organized Role Playing, Role Playing, Board & Card Gaming, Wargaming, Collectible Gaming, Pencil Puzzles and Word Games and Outdoor Sports. It also has a Special Events track and an all-new track called Signature Games, which includes such things as the $5,000 Interactive Puzzle Challenge.
Although we were already bursting at the seams before WizKids came back to us with the proposal for HeroClix programming, we managed to set aside enough space for 128 seats just for you guys!
3) "Why is DEXCON So Expensive?"
DEXCON has never been geared towards one section of gamers. It is a five-day "Gaming Extravaganza" that literally runs for 96 hours - from 7:00PM Wednesday night when we have a giant buffet event for Opening Ceremonies, to Sunday at 7:00PM when we thrown the last stragglers out. Many gaming conventions expect players to go to their assigned tables and play games, and...well, that's about it. Double Exposure built DEXCON as a cohesive family event - no matter where you go at the convention, you'll find something exciting and intriguing.
For example, did you guys know that we have a giant Con Suite all convention long, filled with FREE snacks and refreshments that we encourage you to bring back to your tables? That's all included with your membership. Our halls are lined with demo tables where publishers show off their latest creations for you to look at and playtest if you'd like. Our hotel rooms are filled with nightlife and parties. And you've never seen anything like our two signature parties - The Ghirardelli Chaocolate Fondue (Friday at 7PM) and SUGARFEST (Saturday at 7PM). There are no additional charges for anything at DEXCON - once you pay your membership, you can participate in ANYTHING we have to offer and play in ANY events you'd like (with the exception of sealed booster events, where you're paying for product to play with).
4) "Why Doesn't The Weekend Membership Include the Friday Events?"
Our Complete Membership package is geared towards a five-day experience, and honestly, even at full pre-reg price, $55.00 for a five day event is quite reasonable.
However, we found out years ago that a lot of people just couldn't take off time from work during the week, so we designed the "Weekend Membership" for them, with the theory that they could pay a reduced rate by coming after work on Friday. Given that the main action of the convention takes place on Friday and Saturday, it wouldn't be too smart for us to extend that price to all day Friday and all day Saturday.
Sorry guys, BUT we did give you your own code - CLIXD15, for a $10.00 discount. We HOPE that a lot of you will come earlier than Friday morning to see what the rest of the convention is all about! And certainly, we don't expect you to get much sleep Friday or Saturday nights!
5) "How Do We Register for Events?"
WizKids is going to be running unscheduled Grinder events 10AM - 6PM Friday and Saturday, and unscheduled Battle Royale events 10AM - 6PM Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All of their other events will be on the Complete Schedule which will be posted tonight at 9:00PM.
All of their scheduled events have maximum seating for 16, 24 or 32 players - so in order to make sure you get into the events you want to participate in, you should be watching for the schedule tonight (or in the next few days at least), and follow the instructions for reserving seats. If an event is filled in pre-reg, you will NOT be able to get into it onsite.
We expect lots and lots of freeform Clix gaming at the convention, so don't worry about not having anything to do - but if you want a shot at those convention exclusives, you really should be paying attention to the schedule prior to the convention.
Oh, and maybe you'll even find something else on the schedule that you'd be interested in. I'd be very surprised if you don't

Did you know I like the Night Life and I like to Boogie?
How are the different events paid for on site? For heroclix that is.
The actual events are free - your membership allows you to play in anything you'd like. All you need to do is sign up for things in advance (pre-reg) or onsite (as long as there are empty slots).
The fees charged by WizKids for sealed product will be collected by them onsite when you sit at the event.
So excited to be part of this and can't wait to see DexCon, N.J., all the Heroclix players coming out, and enjoy some nightlife. See everyone there.........

Hi there Vinny,
I'm thinking perhaps you talk to these boards members about: your badge pick-ups and registration desk. How the various badge colors can help people find information, security and directions.
What they should know about the "Big Board" event display.
How, often just taking a break to veg and play a casual board game, watch some anime, a video game tournament, attend a panel or live game show/ Karaoke can be a day's highlight.
Your own dining experiences inside HQP's Eclectic Grill, room services or bar.
