They are removed. They only leave debris tokens if a special rule states they do.

Simple answer - did you check the rulebook?

Like, on page 19?

Where it says this: "A destroyed object is removed from the game and does not cause a debris marker to be placed."

I don't know. I once saw an adult move that Morgan Freeman narrated. His voice just didn't do anything for me.
