If player one has to expand his starting area due to playing A fig that is greater the the purple box starting area, does player B get to expand his start area as well?
Example bat wing on black gate NML map.
I understand if I can start him in the area and ignore the walls until he moves. If I start him "long" ways with the 6 in the start area I would add another row to my start area and can "take out" 3 jail cells.
So would player B get to add a row to his start area?
Similarly could I start batwing "short" ways by having the 3 part of his base in the start area and expanding out 4 colums to acomoate the rest of the base?
Then also would player B get to add as well?
(Hope this hasn't been asked recently search is a pain on the phone)

That is not how it works. You do not ignore anything. You expand the area as follows until you get a spot where you can fit.
- expand one row towards the center
-expand one column, either on the left or right

Player b gets to do whatever a did.

If you can fitinto an area then you must do that before you can expand.

Perhaps what he is thinking of is the extreme case: on certain maps, even you extend the starting areas all the way to the center of the map (so both starting areas touch), you still can't get enough legal space to place the big guys.
In those specific cases, you may place the mutlibase character in such a way that its base would occupy squares it couldn't normally occupy... but that only lasts until you move the mutlibase character. Once it leaves that starting position, it can't ignore terrain any more for placement/end of movement purposes.
Thanks and rep. That totally answered my question and cleared things up.

And in those cases, you would place them anywhere within the expanded starting area (that is, your half of the map), right?

The starting area is only expanded so that you can legally place the character. If there is no legal space, then the starting area would not be expanded beyond what is required for the size of the base.

Is this correct?
If after expanding to half the map does not allow a figure to fit, do you then shrink it back down to the minimum size needed to place the colossal on illegal squares?

STEP 2: CHOOSE MAP AND
STARTING AREAS
The first player chooses the map where the
game will occur. After the first player chooses
the map, the player to his or her left chooses the
starting area—an area of squares inside a purple
boundary line—where he or she will set up his
or her force. If there are more than two players,
continue clockwise around the table until everyone
has chosen a different starting area. In two-player
games, the chosen starting areas must always
be on opposite sides of the map. If either player’s
force will not fit within the purple lines, all starting
areas increase by one row and one column but
cannot overlap another player’s starting area.
Starting areas can be extended until each player’s
force will fit in their respective starting area.
First add a row and a column. Rinse and repeat until the force fits. If that doesn't work:

If multibase character can’t fit within your starting area due to terrain features (Blocking terrain, changes in elevation, etc), you may extend your starting area so that the character will fit. If extending your starting area will not create the necessary space you may instead place the multibased character in your starting area and treat all squares it occupies as if they were clear terrain of the same elevation as long as the multibased character is not moved or placed into other squares. Once the multibased character no longer occupies those squares, they revert to their original terrain and elevation type.
Then place the multi-base fig normally illegal squares.
Thanks for quoting the rulebook, though you were wrong...
You missed the word instead, so it doesn't expand if you have to place the colossal illegally.
Nope. Look closely: If extending your starting area will not create the necessary space you may instead place the multibased character in your starting area and treat all squares it occupies as if they were clear terrain of the same elevation
You may only "instead" if extending the starting area doesn't work.

Unless you are playing on the FF Starter Map where the 4 starting areas are all in the center of the map.
