tournament rules doc it says:

2.6 - Replacement Characters: Whatever replacement character policy the event will use should be available in the event description. The default replacement character limitiation is 3 per 100 points of the build total, with a maximum of 15 replacement characters per force.

Which are the characters you count towards that limit? I.E. if I use Tony Stark and deploy its 3 potential Iron Mans aside... they count as 1 (Tony: the one starts the game),2 (Tony and 1 Iron Man, doesn't matter which one as it can only turn into 1 each game) or 4 characters (Tony and all 3 candidates I can play with)?

If you bring 3 replacement characters (the Iron Men Tony can turn into) then you bring 3 replacement characters.

You have what's on your force that you're starting with. Then you take anything you might want to AE, Split/Merge, Morph, etc., into. Those are your replacement character. You HAVE to bring any replacement figures in this side board. If you play CW Sentry, and you don't bring Void on the side, you can't switch.

And provided you have the space, AEs that have multiple characters they can AE into are great. They give you great mid game options, you might wind up using the fig you liked least because it worked out best.
