Here's a silly little 600 point team I thought up, mainly because I have enough of the SDB to do it.
SI Dr. Strange 149
7 Seven Deadly Brothers (30 x 7 = 210)
SI Namor 150
GLFF Abin Sur 50
GSX Cypher 38
Total: 597
SI Dr. Strange is, of course, the centerpiece of this team, what with his awesome trait that lets him shoot from behind a wall of meat and his 18 Defense with Defend, and also his special Perplex. The Seven Deadly Brothers serve as the wall of meat, surrounding Dr. Strange on all but one side, which can be filled by either Namor or Cypher. Abin Sur's sole purpose in this build is that he's the cheapest figure in the game with the Green Lantern Corps TA, which Dr. Strange copies using his Spider-Man TA to carry his meat barrier. Thanks to the SDB's trait of gaining +1 to all stats when there are 7 of them, and Defend, they have 19 defense (20 in hindering, or 21 in close combat with CR). The 4 clicks of health each means that they should be able to hopefully take 2 hits apiece before going down. If the role as meat barrier is no longer needed, their L/C lets them surround and/or tie-up foes pretty easily, without worrying about blocking Dr. Strange's line of sight.
Cypher's role on the team is primarily filler, as ignoring his trait, he can provide cheap Perplex and also heal Dr. Strange with the X-Men TA. (Depending on the opposing team, an almost-full Utility Belt and an 8th SDB would be just as effective, or perhaps a full Gauntlet.) However, should the oppsing team have someone with a juicy, copyable TA like Mystics, SHIELD, F4, etc., Cypher makes the meat barrier even more effective. Namor is there mainly because I think he complements Dr. Strange well, as Namor can be carried, can remove tokens from Dr. Strange, and provides a proper warrior/mage combo.
I do admit that this team has some glaring flaws that would make it unpalatable for most situations, especially with the incoming change to Energy Explosion, and the fact that, if one SDB dies, the entire barrier gets weaker. This was never about making a competitive team, as there are probably more effective meat barriers to make for Dr. Strange. This was mainly a fun team that I thought up after imagining a similar scenario for the Green Lanter/Green Arrow duo. Having tried this team a couple of times (one time modified), it was fun, but did provide some frustration for my opponents.
One thing it does nicely is highlight something that only SI Dr. Strange can do with the right set-up; he's the only character with opening Defend that can potentially carry enough people to completely surround him, and more importantly, continue to fight while surrounded. The only figures that come close to that are GSX Iceman (transporter, wild-card, 17 defense with opening Defend) and SI Power Man and Iron Fist (wild-card, 18 defense with opening Defend, could get Carry via the Gauntlet), but neither of them have the cruicial ability to ignore friendly characters for line of fire that makes this team even remotely viable. (If only we could get an Invisible Woman that could do this.)
It also highlights the potential of the Seven Deadly Brothers a bit. Like I said, a better meat barrier could probably be found, but for 210 points, you probably aren't going to find 7 guys that can get 19-21 defense.
Modifications to this team for higher point values would likely involve getting the Belt or Gauntlet to make Dr. Strange even deadlier, and maybe adding more SDB to sit on the sidelines to help keep the 19-21 defense going longer. You could also replace Abin Sur with another GLC TA that might be more effective. (I would vote GL Batman to bring it up to 699, just because I like him, and his trait might get a lot of use with the meat barrier around.) Namor could also be replaced with the ~150 ass-kicker of your choice. Or heck, at 700 points, bring in SI Starter Mr. Fantastic and piss people off by bumping up Dr. Strange's or Namor's damage or something.
As for doing something instead of 7 Seven Deadly Brothers, 7 ASM Mysterios would only cost 160 points, or 175 if you want 8. This barrier would have somewhat weaker defenses, trading the +1/+3 to defenses for Super Senses and only 2 clicks of health on most of your barrier, but it does provide fun in the form of having a barrier that can also shoot, as well as Outwit and lay Smoke Clouds (which Dr. Strange ignores). Plus, I suppose it's more thematically appropriate for the Sorceror Supreme to protect himself with illusions, albeit someone else's illusions. (Sadly, I don't have nearly enough Mysterios to try it.)
