Pleading the case for DOOM PATROL and print-comic education through clix
So, it occurs to me lately that, with this new cheesy Wolverine and the X-Men set coming out, that WizKids is losing their mind. Just how many repeated sets do we need? It's like a revolving door of Batman, Superman, X-men and Spiderman in a Conga line prancing out of the offices of WizKids. Hey, don't get me wrong, great pieces, I have some of them, but let's get a little more creative than that. You are producing clix out of fear that no one will know who the hell the characters are unless they've seen a movie. Time for some education.
Thus, I propose the Heroclix "Doom Patrol" set.
The same people who were drawn to the splashes of colour on the marvel pages of X-men should be aware, X-men is possibly a variant of Doom Patrol anyway. The first appearance of the X-men was released just after the first release of Doom Patrol, to begin with and the comics share remarkable similarities. Both comics feature mutants who are reluctant to show their powers, and both comics feature a wheelchair bound character who manages to wrangle the freaks together to form positive mutant fighting teams. That comic writers were often working between the rival factions was a known fact in '63, and the idea might have been leaked to Stan Lee prior to releasing X-men.
The similarities begin to end with the story arcs and their branches and variants throughout the years, but that does not change the fact that Doom Patrol was, and remains, a very very good comic. It is rich with characters who have interesting dialogues and rapports, and the enemy database is more than enough to fill a heroclix inventory on its own. The crossovers with Superman, or Sucide Squad and the modern 2000's iterations of the comics provide more than enough DC content to satisfy the needs of those unversed in Doom Patrol, and the next idea I have might satisfy the business needs of the parent company DC.
More importantly, the current lineup of Doom Patrol characters, as it is, paltry. It stands at a dozen, and all of the characters are dated, or virtually useless for their point values. Doom Patrol, in essence, has been ghettoized by Wizkids, while the already prominent characters keep on pushing through the conga line. These are terrific characters who have a wide array of clix allies and enemies. Kalki, alone, would provide for a powerful combination of evil leader and horror-like minions that would keep heroclix fans satisfied. Or imagine what you could do with Shrapnel with his ability forceblast/pulse wave/energy explosion type of power.
You have already picked apart Doom Patrol by haphazardly and in an unfitting manner releasing variants of Robot Man, Negative Woman, or parts of their vaunted arch enemies, the Brotherhood of Evil so you know that you've already dabbled in the Doom Patrol set. Are you waiting around for a movie or for someone to tell you it's cool? I'm telling you it's cool. DP is a classic and has all the parts for a fully launched set. I'll give you one more idea, if you are still frightened about the possibility of disrupting the Batman/X-Men/Spider-Man/Superman conga line. Educate your followers. Couple your sets, particularly the more obscure ones, with coupons to buy comics, or read comics online. Support the industry rather than producing toys.
Find time to reward the artists and writers who allowed you to exist by getting the community of clix fans to also obsess about the print culture that supports you, and not the other way around. Do it soon, and start with an amazing comic. Find time to get together on that table and read up on your Doom Patrol, the original X-men (IMO). You won't be disappointed.
I need more clix about characters that Grant Morrison wrote about... He's one of the best fantasy writers ever.
Yey for the Doom Patrol.
Also need a Flex Mentallo clix.

Ummm, did you not see the clixed characters in Teen Titans and Batman. I consider myself an avid comic geek, and I didn't know 3/4 of those characters.
Plus, it looks as if we're getting some much needed remakes in the form of New Mutants, Brotherhood, and possibly Alpha Flight (fingers crossed).
I do agree that we need some more Doom Patrol though.
Boy, I sure have pissed off a lot of people lately on the interwebs. Sorry to all.
What about calling them "Papillomas?"
Crusherhogan I totally agree with you in that respect. There are some interesting obscure pieces which are under the umbrella of massive corporate and iconic banners (Batman/xmen/spidey etc. etc.). In that respect I think it would be great if heroclix also offered a comic mail-in to learn about the obscure ones, or a code to have access to online reading. I'm trying to say promote the obscure so everyone doesn't dilute their knowledge to what is already in the common cultural thread of comic iconography. I agree with you.
and yes. doom patrol set all the way. Though Doom Patrol may be a little under the radar, Grant Morrison is definitely not. Prolific comic genius.

I think that's a great idea! I already go to the local shop to buy issues of comics to learn more about certain figs, so this would be great! It sucks that they took the little bios off the cards, I loved those writeups, they were good for a laugh or two during games...

Honestly besides not getting a modern day Captain Marvel or Shazam the Doom Patrol should have been thrown in some of the DC sets at some point. Other wants would be the cast of Sandman....I know I know the endless are cosmic blah blah whatever I want them cause its a good book and the figs would look awesome.

Here's an idea: the ASM set had 8 chases, so why not put the Endless(and Daniel) in the next DC set as chases? They would look awesome on different bases.

I love the Doom Patrol. but the connection to the X-Men is overstated. They came out too close to each other to really have influcenced each other.
However, reading those early DP stories, I do think that the DP is essentially the "anti-Fantastic Four" with popular scorn instead of celebrity, and a token non-freak member as opposed to the token freak.
