ASSIMILATION UNDERWAY: Tactical Cube 138 can use the Multiattack ability, but one of the actions it takes as a free action must be an attack that targets a ship marked with an Assimilation token.
Can I declare a multiattack targeting two opposing clix with my first attack, hit at least one giving it an assimilation token and then target that click with my second action from multiattack? If so, what happens if I miss on my first attack? I'm assuming I can't use multiattack?
Or does one of my targets from either attack have to have an assimilation token prior to the declaration of multiattack?
I know I didn't word this question the best way, but I hope you can understand what I'm trying to ask.
You wouldn't declare the section action of Multi-Attack until after the first one has been resolved. So you can certainly target somebody with attack #2 that got their Assimilation Token from attack #1.

Borg When a ship using this team ability hits an opposing ship, place 1 Assimilation token on the target.
I would say that you would at least need to have a Target that already has a token on it within range since there is no guarantee of a successful attack.

But they can token a character with free action one, and that would be enough to allow free action two to be an attack, no?

The problem is that you must take both actions from Multi-Attack, however you cannot ensure that you will be able to hit one of the targets with the attack.
If you legally cannot complete an action then you cannot take that action. When you first attempt to activate Multi-Attack you cannot legally complete the action since one of the two actions must be an attack that targets a character with an Assimilation Token. If none exist that you cannot activate Multi-Attack.

I would say if you miss the first attack you cannot perform a second action.
If the quoted power is correct I don't see your reasoning; please explain.

You merely have to target, not succeed in the attack, not deal damage from the attack...just target. As written I could target, fail, and continue. As written I could also dual target (1 with a token, one w/o) and choose to deal all the damage to the one w/o the token and continue on my merry multi-attack way.

Posting from phone = the suck. I was trying to say that you cannot activate Multi-Attack period unless there is a legal target prior to the activation. This is due to you not being able to ensure that you will have a legal target for the second action.
It is actually a very poorly worded power IMO. It should have said that once per turn it can make an attack against a ship with an Assimilation Token as a free action.
As it is written it leaves a lot to be desired and really restricts the use of its Multi-Attack to a nah unusable.

Ahh...got it and agree. There must be one fig with a token already on the board and reachable via your multi-attack action. And that fig must be one of your targets of attack.

In design there was obviously a want to have the Attacks at -1 damage. Having one as a free action otherwise would not create that. Note these were designed before the Watchlist rulings.

It does not have to be the target. It needs to be there to activate Multi-Attack. If you manage to place an assimilation token on another ship, then that ship can be the target of the second attacks instead.

What happens if your first attack, all characters with assimilation tokens make their shape change rolls? It creates an oddly illegal game state.

I completely get that, however as is this makes it very wonky.
What if there is a ship with an Assimilation Token that is 9 squares away. Technically I could Running Shot or just move into range, but am I forced to do so?
If a ship is 9 squares away and you currently have Running Shot are you allowed to activate Multi-Attack? Running Shot technically doesn't qualify for allowing this use of Multi-Attack to work. Running Shot is not an attack granted by Multi-Attack. It is a power action that then grants a free Ranged Combat Action.
If I am reading this power straight through in order to activate Multi-Attack there must be a ship within Range and Line of Fire with an Assimilation Token assigned to it. You then need to ensure that your first action does not prevent you from making said attack.
For instance if the Cube is going against two other ships. Ship A has an assimilation Token and is 6 Squares away and in Line of Fire of the Cube. Ship B does not have an Assimilation Token and is 12 squares away in the opposite direction. Technically I can activate Multi-Attack, however my first action cannot be to Running Shot towards Ship B if that use of Running Shot would prevent me from being able to attack Ship A since I could miss the attack on Ship B.
All I'm saying is that as written this power can cause A LOT of issues and be very hard to properly use.

I don't know if this would or not actually. Technically you did take an action that targeted a Ship with an Assimilation Token there by fulfilling that requirement. It then became an illegal target, however you still satisfied that requirement IMO.
But again this is another part where there are all of these crazy interactions with how this power is worded that can make it very difficult to correctly use.

So can the "Attack" For Assimilation under way be any action that would RESULT in an attack?
Such as Pulse Wave (a ranged combat action), or Ranged Combat Expert (Power action) Or is it a plain vanilla attack? (OF course taking into account any game effects that kick in with an attack)
NOw what about Running Shot...that'sa Power action that leads to movement that leads to a ranged combat action...Would that count for it?

The shape change question? Can we get that answered...I assume it's under discussion.
