STEP 2: CHOOSE MAP AND
STARTING AREAS
The first player chooses the map where the
game will occur. After the first player chooses
the map, the player to his or her left chooses the
starting area—an area of squares inside a purple
boundary line—where he or she will set up his
or her force. If there are more than two players,
continue clockwise around the table until everyone
has chosen a different starting area. In two-player
games, the chosen starting areas must always
be on opposite sides of the map. If either player’s
force will not fit within the purple lines, all starting
areas increase by one row and one column but
cannot overlap another player’s starting area.
Starting areas can be extended until each player’s
force will fit in their respective starting area.
STEP 3: PLACE CHARACTERS
The first player places all of the characters on his
or her force on the map in his or her starting area.
The player to the first player’s left then places
all of his or her characters in his or her starting
area. If there are more than two players, continue
clockwise around the table until all players have
placed their forces in their starting areas.
You will constantly pick up your characters
during a game to look at or turn their dials; you may
want to mark the square your character was in so
that you always return it to the correct square.
Once Steps 1–3 are complete, play
begins with the first player.
PLACING OBJECTS Between Steps 2 and 3 in the “Preparing For Battle” section (see p. 5), players can place objects. Starting with the first player, each player takes turns placing one of their objects. Objects must be placed in clear terrain outside of any player’s starting area. Special objects must also be placed 5 or more squares away from any player’s starting area.
Now, it seems that you are supposed to calculate where figures will go before the actual placement of characters. But how does that work exactly? A few examples.
1) I have 50 Horde Tokens and 1 other figure. That could take up 51 spots or 6. Must I decide before I place them how I will place them? Does the rule mean that I have to stack them if that will make them fit?
2) Uatu. G05 Uatu The Watcher
The first sentence of I Am Only a Watcher (50 points) reads
―When placing characters at the beginning of the game, place
Uatu The Watcher anywhere on the map that's at least 2 squares
away from any starting area."
Now, I know I don't place him in my starting, but at Step 2 will I still need to calculate room for him to see if starting areas are extended? "If either player’s force will not fit within the purple lines." So let's say my team will exactly fit in the purple lines but I also have Uatu. Are the starting areas extended?
3) Lastly, what about things that cannot be placed like Special Objects? I can't find anything about them being "automatically KO'd" anymore.
Thanks,
Jon
aqhoffman- greatest post possibly ever
jtallday- Jon I wouldn't challenge you if I wasn't sure you are wrong cuz I don't have that kind of energy.
First of all, it is good to see you back in the rules forum. Some of us have actually sort of missed your presence.
I know pretty much nothing about starting area business but I wasn't sure if you saw this thread so I thought I'd show it to you. If you are asking if Uatu needs to be accounted for in the starting area my guess is no. I don't understand your #3 at all but if an object can't be placed than it is simply not placed. This was discussed when the FI map that is all water was released but I don't have time to find that thread at the moment.
