I plan on getting into comics again, i havnt read any since i was about 7 or 8 (15 now). I really like the X-men, so i was wondering what you guys would say about some of their comics. Could you please post which are good and which aren't, or if i should just pass up X-men and go to some other type of comic. Thanks for your help
p.s. If you think i should go to another comic, it doesnt matter what universe, DC or Marvel. Thanks again
My personal favorite for the past few years has been te Exiles. Basicly they are heroes from different universes that hop from one alternate reality to the next. Most of the characters have X-Men ties-Nightcrawler's daughter for example. I highly recommend this book.
the current X-comics are all pretty much all about the whinney little mutants who "every one hates". there not like the X-men of old. If your a fan of good X-men fun stick to ultimate x-men. bring the x back to basics was the best thing marvel ever did with them.
And you dont want to go anywhere near "secondary mutations"............
I agree with Zatarra. The best (and pretty much only) good X-Title out currently is Exiles. It's fun and has the overall feel of the older books, but kept some originality. Do not, I repeat, do not pick up Ult. X-Men, Xtreme X-Men, New X-Men, or just about anything else with the "X-Men" in it. The closest thing besides Exiles with an X is Paradise X.
But if you like the feel of the older comics, go with the TPB's Essential X-Men Vol. I-IV (I believe. It might be Vol. III), and the older storylines.

I have to concur with the oddly named "nightcreaper".
I stopped collecting X-Men comics in 1991, right about when Jubilee appeared.
Since then, I've been really not at all impressed with Marvel - Ah reckon Ah sure am lucky to have missed the speculation boom. All of the 90s is a complete waste of newsprint.
But the Ultimate X-Men series has been very well done. The collections of trade paperbacks let you start from #1 without needing a heck of a lot of back story.
I think it's the popularity of the Marvel movies (and the fact that they don't use characters from the late 80s, 90s or 2000s) that have been encouraging this simpler, retro-style of comics...
Best way to start reading comics is to look for one of those "100 best..." type lists on the Net and collect a couple of trade paperback collections - what with the cost of single issues, this way you're guaranteed something good that you'll want to reread, at around the same price.
Apart from X-Men, may I suggest you find the first Dark Knight Returns book? Or MAUS. Or Bone. Or Watchmen. All these are very good, and consist of actually good writing, instead of that Spawn vs. Predator vs. Alien action fluff that you'll read once and forget...

Basically, Anything with an 'ultimate' in the title is vomit inducingly bad. Badly drawn, badly written, shallow, naive, trumped up, pubescent, Illiterate bastardisation. Sensationalism attempting to make money from good ideas from 20 years ago.
A continuation of MArvel not having a good Idea for 15 years.
I think anything out there with Ultimate is the way to go. I have been reading for 20 years and I think the Ultimate titles have great art, great stories and great ideas.
Fantastic Four has also gotten really good in the last year. DOOM!!!
Spinebreaker, the thread was asking for the best X-book out there right now, if f1aherty wanted an argument over whether or not the ultimate books are good he would have asked for it. F1 probably doesnt even know what your talking about, because if you read his post he is trying to get back into comics, so he doesnt know the ultimate line yet. calm down and realize no one said the ultimate xmen were the best thing ever, just that the storys in it are better than the regular X-books.
The best X-Book i Xtreme X-Men by the mighty mutant father Chris Claremont. After that, Ultimate is not too bad. It'll be even better when Bendis takes over.
As for the other subject. Anyone who thinks Mark Bageley's art on Ultimate Spidey is bad needs their eyes checked. I can also understand the dislike of U. X-Men and Ultimates by the hardliners, but Ultimate Spidey is so close in spirit to the Lee/Ditko days that it is a wonder to behold.
Hoping editors wake up and smell the coffee, and put Larocca back on Xtreme where he belongs.
By the way. If you want to read the best team book in comics, pick up Fantastic Four starting with #60.
Other good reads:
1) Birds of Prey (never mind the TV)
2) Ruse (fantasy + Sherlock Holmes)
3) The Legion (of Super-heroes)
4) Tomb Raider (light hearted fun)
5) Formerly Known as The JLA (Boosterific)
6) The Punisher (not for the squeamish)
7) Hellblazer (ditto)
