In the heyday of the 90's, Marvel introduced two new heroes that starred in their own books; Darkhawk and Sleepwalker. So it only made sense to evntually have these new faces cross over alongside one another (along with a certain wall-crawler). In this edition of Comic Accurate, it's a titanic trio team-up in the tale called "Portals of Power"!
"Portals of Power" was a three issue storyline back in 1992 that kicked off in the pages of Darkhawk #19 and continuing into #20 before crossing over and concluding in Sleepwalker #17. The story centered around some guy named Portal that wants some item that Darkhawk is also looking into. Along come the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, prompting a fight. Soon, Spider-Man gets involved and eventually, so does Sleepwalker. Things get a little more complicated when Portal gets mind-controlled and turns on the heroes, Spidey's sent to another dimension and it falls on the two newbies to save Spidey, then Portal and stop the Brotherhood.
Not the best recap, but it's not a great story to begin with. The main thing here is that we have a team for these two new pieces from the Guardians of the Galaxy set to play together along with a character anyone can run for a cheap 300 point build.

(Special) Body Switch in Null Space: Give Darkhawk a free action. When you do, he modifies his defense value by -2 and can use Shape Change, but can't use any other powers or abilities until your next turn. At the beginning of your next turn, heal him to click #2. (Attack) Grappling Hook: When Darkhawk hits with a ranged combat attack and actions resolve, you may place the hit character in any square adjacent to Darkhawk.
(Improved) Warp Gaze: Improved Targeting: Ignores Hindering Terrain (Special) When Rick Wakes, I Return to the Mindscape: Friendly characters within 3 squares can't be the target of Mind Control. At the beginning of your turn, roll a d6. On a result of 1, place Sleepwalker in your starting area and heal him of 2 damage. (Defense) Contact with the Ground Strengthens Me: At the beginning of your turn, choose Earthbound/Neutralized and Invulnerability or choose Toughness. Sleepwalker can use the chosen power(s) until your next turn. (Damage) Warp Beams: When an opposing character within range and line of fire is adjacent to a printed square of blocking terrain or occupies printed hindering terrain, Sleepwalker can use Barrier and Smoke Cloud as free actions until your next turn.
(Speed) Surprise! I'm Under You!: Spider-Man can use Leap/Climb. When Spider-Man makes a close combat attack targeting a character on a higher elevation, modify Spider-Man's attack and damage values by +1. (Damage) Distracting Banter: If an opposing character attacked Spider-Man and missed, modify that character's defense value by -1 until that character's next turn.
290 points. To fill things out, I put Loner on Spider-Man and Running Start on Sleepwalker.
Why these figures - We just got Sleepwalker after all this time! He's our only option for that character. As for Darkhawk, we only have two options and the newer one is definitely the better here. That leaves Spidey, who we've got a ton of options for. Personally, I was trying to decide between this one, the ASM gravity feed version, the experienced level from the AvX starter set, and the 99 point TabApp version. The TabApp got ruled out because of the sculpt, the AvX one had too few clicks and the gravity feed was leaving too many points left over to fill. So this SR from the Hulk set works for his points, has a decent length of life... AND he's got a useful TA to wildcard off to your teammates.
Tips for running this team - First off, keep choosing the Earthbound/Invulnerability combo for Sleepwalker. Yes, you lose flight, but you can be carried by Darkhawk and if you're parked in hindering, you won't be slowed down thanks to Running Start. Worst case scenario, if you get unlucky and keep getting yanked back to your starting area, it won't be too tough for you to get back out there.
Next, don't be afraid to push Spidey. With Loner and his second click, he'll have a 19 defense.
Last big tip is be mindful of what you choose if you get the map roll. Try to get something with a lot of hindering or blocking so Sleepwalker can get that free smoke cloud and barrier.
That's it for this edition of Comic Accurate! Next week is an all-new Unclixed, and in two weeks, we revisit an event from the 80's!
Who is "Wall-Crawler"? Is that the same as this "Spider-Man" character you included?
It's cool when you see supporting characters like that made. Cool for fans of Sleep Walker and Darkhawk anyway.
It's just like how they made a Deadpool to go with that Weasel set.
I assumed this was Toad's Brotherhood, and google verified that... an issue summary I looked at listed the "bad guys" of the issue as Toad, Sauron, Blob, Pyro and Mindless ones.
You can easily make 300 out of those four Brotherhood, though both versions of Sauron are missing the keyword.
How were Mindless Ones used in the story?

Wow, this is a 90's revival thread huh? I remember these two when they came out, I liked them, but went back to read them now, and..... lets say they are dated?

amen to that. this was THE first comic that I ever owned. I pulled it out the other day and had a good laugh. I remember reading it and thinking, "this is the brotherhood of evil mutants? they don't seem so tough to me.".

Portal sent Spidey to the Dark demension in Darkhawk 20 while under Sauron's mind control and at the end when Sleepwalker and Darkhawk got things under control again, Portal brought him back, but the Mindless Ones tried to follow him out. Great story imo and I wish they would come out with more Darkhawk storylines.
Why not the Gravity Feed with the Spiderman family ATA?
This is addressed in the article.

Really? You've never heard that term used in conjunction with Spider-Man?

Sadly, there's a member missing of that Brotherhood in Phantazia, who has yet to be clixed.
