A secret meeting is convened between a disparate group of DC characters. But these heroes and villains have one thing in common; That they've all had encounters with new super-spy Dick Grayson. In this edition of Comic Accurate, it's the gang from Grayson Annual #3!
(Author's Note: The idea for this week's article should be credited to Tidge, when he posted about it here. The second I saw that, I had to check this book out for myself.)
In a secluded and private locale, four diverse individuals have been summoned together: the mystical expert John Constantine, the mentally unstable Harley Quinn, new Green Lantern Simon Baz and Azrael (Jean-Paul Valley, who is apparently alive and well in the New 52). The man who called them all? Jim Corrigan. Jim has some questions for this quartet about some run-ins they had with Spyral's newest recruit, Dick Grayson. Each character recounts their team-up with the former Nightwing and by the end of the story, we find out exactly why Jim called them all.
Because spoiler alert, he's not Jim Corrigan at all, it's really Dick! He realized these four people had figured out his identity past his swirly disguise and used this meeting as an opportunity to find out how much they knew before using nanobots to wipe their memories of him. A bit dubious behavior on Dick's part, but nonetheless this group of people along with the eponymous Agent 37 is our team...
Why these figures - Well, Agent 37 is the basis for all this, so we HAVE to use him. Azrael got picked because we don't have any other versions of Jean-Paul Valley in that role. We have him as Batman, and Michael Lane as Azrael, but the old REV is all we've got of Jean-Paul in his old role. That just left Constantine, Simon and Harley to get picked based on points. You could pull this team off at a hundred points cheaper, all you have to do is drop the feats and constructs, then use the Harley from the main Batman set, Constantine from the old New 52 gravity feed and Simon Baz from Trinity War. But I chose the higher point build since the characters do a little more and can go a little further. Plus, Harley's figure has the look from the comic.
Tips for running this team - Truthfully, while the book is based around Agent 37, Simon's going to be your main shooter here. Pick him to be Harley's Puddin', have her also wild card Agent 37's PD TA. Then position them so Simon can get that PD bonus on his ranged attack, whether he gets there via running shot or Constantine TK's him. He could also get a stat bump from Harley and Constantine's Perplex. And while the wall construct was selected mainly for some early game protection, you can swap that construct out for either the sniper rifle or spotlight, depending on your target's location.
Let us know how this Grayson team does for you! That's it for this edition of Comic Accurate! Next week is an all-new Unclixed, and in two weeks it's (hopefully) something Spider-related in time for the release of Superior Foes!
Thanks for the 'Tip o' the Pin'. I played a slight variation of this team (that can be seen in the link above) and actually went 3-0.
Grayson turned out to be a fun book, and this is a fun lineup of characters in HeroClix. At least one opponent asked if my team was supposed to have "some kind of theme"! When I told them it was from Grayson Annual #3, the judge asked "What's a Grayson?", which I suppose goes to show how far out of the mainstream consciousness the New 52 had fallen.
Agent 37 is a very fun piece to play. The only alpha-strike he fears is a close-combat attack, and it is very nice that he doesn't technically lose his disguise until after he attacks, so opponents cannot usually force him to re-roll a successful attack roll.
I like this team, it's creative and diverse. And I have a variation. Using White Lantern Simon frees up 55 pts which allows 25 points to be used for an upgrade to con ex Crisis Knightfall Batman charge leap climb and running shot. Since he has the armor keyword, I would consider Jocasta or because of his insane mentality, Parallax. Jocasta can help him double boost his attack to 12 or go +1/1 attack and defense all the while having outwit at the ready.
I forgot if indomitable qualifies as a power rather than an ability but JP valley batman can definitely appreciate that option as well.
Parallax infused JP valley batman would really represent Knightfall where he spanked Bane in public. He just had Bane out maneuvered and having HSS really represents that.
They say the best weapon is one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once. That's how Dad did it, that's how America does it, and it's worked out pretty well so far." Robert Downey/Tony Stark
