Greetings players and welcome back to another installment of Slade’s Top 5!
In case you couldn’t have guessed, Slade’s Top 5 is where I examine various elements of HeroClix (and other related materials) and rank them according to my top five in a given category. Think you can handle that? Great! Then click on the full story link below.
Sometime back in 2016, I presented my top 5 Spider-Man picks. Not very long after that we received a bunch of new versions and I was asked by some if I would ever revise my top Spidey 5 picks. Having had the chance to play these characters, I felt the timing was right to revisit the list and make some changes.
The conditions for this list are the same as before. The character must have the moniker of “Spider-Man” as part of its name and has to be playable as part of a standard 300 point game.
Alright then, Spider-Friends… GO FOR IT!
#5 dp060 Superior Spider-Man
Bumping off the DP Superior Spider-Man (Sorry Otto) and taking the #5 spot, it’s the common Spider-Man from the Superior Foes of Spider-Man set. Not only is he capable of dishing out serious damage, but his “Call in help…” trait gives him the potential to place a friendly character with the Spider-Man Family keyword in an adjacent square after hitting with an attack. This is a great way to deliver the coup de grace and keep Spidey from feeling lonely simultaneously. His Spider Sense special power is pretty amazing as his chances to evade an attack increase with the point cost of his attacker. C’mon, at just 70 points, you really can’t go wrong with this guy.
#4 asm049v Spider-Man 2099
This non Peter Parker Spider-Man manages to retains his spot on the list, Spider-Man 2099. Improved movement allows him to get around the battlefield with ease and his combined Blades/Claws/Fangs & Combat Reflexes makes him a formidable close combatant. If you elect to play him at 160 points, he will eventually wield the mighty Mjolnir becoming quite beastly on his last few clix. On the down side he is very susceptible to ranged combat attacks. Absolutely playable at either 80 or 160 points, Spider-Man 2099 is a great character with an equally great dial.
#3cwsop013 Spider-Man
Another economical option for teams comes from the Civil War event set and pushes out the previous number 3. Highly mobile and capable of massive damage in a single turn, this Spidey is great fun to play. His unique dial design combined with the Annoying Arachnid trait in many ways make this one feel the very comic accurate. The look on your opponents face when you charge down from elevated terrain to hit for anywhere from 6 to 12 damage and then sidestep back up that elevated terrain never gets old.
#2 wkM15-008 Spider-Man
Symbiote Spider-Man not only has appropriate powers and abilities, his combat values are all right where they should be. I’ve played this Spidey a few times and I can genuinely say he does not disappoint. Sure, there is that whole sonic sensitivity thing to be aware of, but that’s a minor price to play for a dial this amazing. If I were to have any grumble about this character at all it’s that he lacks the Avengers keyword. Still, as great as the black suit Spider-Man is, there is a new king to be crowned.
And the new #1 is…
Sfsm049 Spider-Man (Hand Stand Spidey)
I know a real shocker, right? All of the above mentioned are very solid options but face it tiger, if you're going to field a Spider-Man and want the most bang for the cost; this is your guy. This version of the web-slinger can be challenging to deal with for sure, but he’s far from what you would call broken. One of the best things about this one is his immunity to that vexatious precision strike power (sorry not a fan). Should Spidey get hit and knocked past his unmatched mobility clix, he goes into last ditch effort mode, becoming arguably even more dangerous than before. (Note: For 6 more points, you can equip him with the Symbiote special object and gain the advantages of wkM15-008, with out the weakness of the sonic sensitivity )
Well there you have it, my revised top 5 picks for Spider-Man. What Spider-Man(s) clix do you like best? Don’t be shy, share your thoughts below.
Until next time players, good gaming!

We really have such a wealth of playable Spider-Men these days. Great list. Glad to see Civil War 013 on there--as much as I love 049 which inarguably deserves the top spot, love the low-cost effectiveness of 013, and he's become my #1 go-to piece (which was the AVX piece for a long time, but this guy's so much more cost effective). If 049 is Peter Parker at the height of his skills, 013 is mid-career, team-player Parker. So mobile, so punchy.
I enjoyed reading this article. I was a big fan of Spidey back before Erik Larsen took over, way back when.
Over the years Spider-Man became one gimmick after another and I got overloaded, bored and just lost interest in the character altogether.
I haven't fielded Spidey in Heroclix in years but I just might in the near future. Good stuff.

"Alcohol may have been a factor."
We're overdue for Wizkids to make Joe on the Lawmaster and other 2000AD characters.

flurry and perplex is one way, its more of the potential the figure has.
The article is a top 5 of one character and it implied the figure could do up to 12 damage and I couldn't see how, even with Flurry, his damage could get up to 12 on its own merits, hence my query.
It's a given that any character can do more with supporting pieces on a team but only Spider-man was in discussion.
I'm glad because 12 on an 80pt Peter would've been insane!

In fairness the article does not imply he can do it on his own, as stated as always I'm rating the character as part of a 300 point build. Just to be clear.
I think the #5 spot should have gone to either the Fast Forces Spider-Man or the new Superior Spider-Man.
The Fast Forces one with his crazy sling shot/Hypersonic Speed power is fun, and traited Flurry on Superior makes him really powerful. I like to have Otto wait in the back with a heavy object and then call him in with the Spider Verse trait at just right time to cripple the other team.
