If the target is in the hindering terrain do they not get the +1 to their defense? (if it's a ranged attack)
Never mind....if the only square of hindering terrain is where the target is then they don't get the +1 however, if there is hindering terrain between the attacker and target then the target does get the +1
Line of Fire drawn to a character in a square of Hindering Terrain would cross over the "green line" of the Hindering square, and the target would get the +1 to their Defense against a Range Attack..

Line of Fire: Hindering terrain impedes
line of fire. If a line of fire between two
characters is hindered, modify the target’s
defense value by +1 for the attack, unless
the only square of hindering terrain
crossed is occupied by the attacker
That's from page 13 of the rulebook. The only time hindering terrain does not let the target receive a +1 is if LoF is only crossed is the attacker's square.

Rulebook p. 12
Any line of fire or path of movement that crosses hindering terrain (including the square occupied by the target) is labeled a “hindered” line of fire or path of movement.
