When Soul of the Duelist first came out, everyone I talked to was wanting to get their hands on Horus the Black Flame Dragon. I fully expected to see Horus decks rise and become a new threat to Chaos. Here we are a few months later and it seems that no one runs Horus. I have played many different people since SoD came out and to date I have only seen TWO people running Horus decks.
How is this possible that such a great set of cards like Horus is going so under-utlizied??? I've started running a Lv 6 in my beatdown deck and I must admit it works very well. As soon as I get Lv 8 I'm gonna try to fit him in somehow. I've seen the power of Horus and know that he can crush nearly anyone.
Horus ALONE won't work THAT great unless you use him alongside other monsters like Jinzo or Royal Decree. Otherwise, he's STILL easy pickings for the various trap cards like Sakuretsu Armor, Raigeki Break, Mirror Wall, etc.
Not to mention LV8 is a Nomi monster so once he's dead, there's no bringing him back to life from the graveyard or from the removed from play area and he has to negate the ACTIVATION of a magic card, he can't negate continuous stuff already on the field.
His effect is good sure, but is it really worth it alone??? Not really.
True, but Silent Swordsman Lv5 will be far better then Horus Lv6. Still, I say that you couldn't ask for a more powerful card then Horus Lv8 if you tried, if he were any better, he would be just as broken as the Black Luster Soldier, and even still I'm thinking he might be broken anyways.
Nomi or not, there are ways to save such a magnificent beast, and with the Rise of Destiny set, Monster Reincarnation never felt so good in a Horus deck. I mean if you really look at it, Horus IS a great monster, and yes he has his fatal flaws just like any other monster. So if you were to say that Horus isn't all that great of a card, the same could be said for every other "great" monster.
So yeah, I have to agree, Horus decks are underplayed for the hype it was getting before SoD came out. In fact, my entire card shop was in near orgasm when SoD came out, everyone fawning over Horus. Hell, the poor Mystic Swordsmen didn't see any attention until about 2 weeks later, and even still everyone blows off Armed Dragon. I say that Horus is and always will be a great monster, the problem? Well despite its cost, it's also hard to incorperate into a deck besides one based around itself.
While Black Luster Soldier can be fit into any deck that has a decent amount of lights and darks, Horus sadly, has to rely on his own kin to come out. So no matter what you're REQUIRED to have a Lv6 in your deck. It makes it rather difficult to say the least. But still, despite this downfall, if you did build a deck around it, I'm sure it could kill most any Chaos if it had the right cards and potential. I know I'd side deck a Dark Designator and D.D. Designator in my deck if I knew I was going up against a Chaos deck.
Get rid of the Soldier, and most any deck that's based around it is boned. But get rid of Lv8 in a Horus deck, well if you run 2/2/2, then you've ANOTHER Horus Lv8 on its way, and if you don't, you've still got Lv6 rarin and ready to go, with all of his support. So you make the desicion for yourself... but no matter what anyone says, Horus is a great card and IS underplayed and under rated.
In a dedicated horus deck, I'm likely run 0/3/2... as I'm fairly sure that lv 4 isnt necisary.
When DB 2 comes out, I'm making a horus deck, based souly on the fact I'll be decking three royal decrees, a call of the haunted, and a fake trap as my only traps. Prepare to see a mass of royal decrees, as my decks will be running signifigantly less traps once it hits the binders of every 8 year old.
Not that I wont be using it too. Its synergy with horus is amazing. By that date, I might even think of running X2 horus 6, x1 horus 8, and x2 pheonix. The ammount of M/T hate would be astonishing. Brandishing the usual suspects like exiled, scientist, and maybe even a DDWL would be sufficiant with using all the normal monster hate with magic cards.
hahah, horus>chaos, hahahaha, that foolish bird would hall to a chaos sorcerer within mere seconds, and the Black luster soldier would massacre it, and lets not forget the beautifull Chaos emperor Dragon, see.........Chaos>Horus.....thats and my choas mad merry way against my friends horus..............heheh, can't be sp summoned EXEPT mwhahaha
The reason why Horus doesn't do so well in today's game:
1) the advanced format makes for more trap forms of monster removal (Bottomless, ring, sakuretsu)
2) There are still too many forms of monster forms of monster removal (tribe, x-force, scientist, cyber jar)
the 3 cards that people are using if they have them now are divine wrath, royal decree, and My body as a shield. they help defend Horus from non-magic removal.

Chaos = way too common and boring now.
Not to mention Chaos Emperor Dragon is BANNED.
Also, I doubt anyone would use Horus without SOME way to protect it and people with Horus usually use Divine Wrath because of those VERY cards you mentioned so you could bring out those Sorcerer's and that Soldier only to have them die. Sure, they're ok monster's, but they're MORE vulnerable than Horus is. People are also running more negation like Solemn Judgement, Horn of Heaven and Royal Oppression BECAUSE of the more widespread use of Chaos Soldier and more prenegator's are used now so they can get rid of Soldier and such and remove them from play before you can even think about springing them. Horus and LV decks also require more skill, patience and concentration to build so they work good while Chaos is a no brainer really. Light + Dark + Soldier.
It takes MORE than just CED, Soldier, Sorcerer and Magician to make a real chaos deck. I find that if you really want to try to make a deck around a certain "family" (Toons, Guardians, Spirits) you should try to use at least 1 of each of them. Of course, people are more than free not to. I just find it annoying when people use, for example, they use 3 Dark Magician in a deck and automatically call it a Dark Magician deck. The same goes for chaos, I see people throw in CED and Soldier and automatically call it a Chaos deck.
I'd say Horus > Chaos in terms of skill and such.
On another note, I'd say Horus LV6 and Silent Swordsman LV5 is equal in advanced format since most opponents will use traps to kill them and not magic. In traditional, Horus LV6 would definitely be better than Silent because of the old Horus LV6 + Dark Hole combo whereas you can't do that with Silent since its only unaffected by opponent's magic cards so it'd only work if the opponent used it.
More entertaining to play against horus decks
horus decks have a maker with more honor as a duelist
horus can protect himself far better than BLS or Chaos Sorcerer
no horus card is banned
yes, a horus can defend its self slightly better but would be destroyed INSTANTLY buy either choas..........
making it
Chaos>Horus
You're wrong there. People who use Horus usually use Divine Wrath now so when you bring out Soldier or Sorcerer and try to use effects, they're dead meat. Not to mention Horn of Heaven and Solemn Judgement are seeing more play as well. They can chain to the activation of those effects with Torrential Tribute and then Interdimentional Matter Transporter or Compulsary Evacuation Device to save their Horus, but kill the Soldier. Horus would most likely NOT die "instantly" from chaos. More counters are used simply because of chaos and people are sure to take precautions with how widespread Chaos is used so.... Horus > Chaos
The thing I like about my Horus deck, and I think most well-built Horus decks share this, is that Horus is MUCH faster than Chaos.
With Chaos, you are basically just twiddling your thumbs and doing the best you can until you draw the Soldier.
With Horus, and I'm not even talking about the Level Up! card, you can control yourself how fast you get your LV8 out. There really arent' many cards that can help you get the Soldier onto the field faster, but there are a LOT of cards that can help you get Horus 8 out pretty damn quickly.
A well-built Horus deck is faster than a well-built Chaos deck.
The funny part about the comparison is this:
BLS is the best card a Chaos deck can draw
Horus 8 is the WORST card a Horus deck can draw. In fact, Horus 8 is the worst card to draw in any situation at any time for any deck.
And despite the fact that everyone is right, and that Horus IS better then Chaos, I'm suprised that no one has taken notice to Daniel's slightly less then intelligent typing and grammer structure and well... ignorance.
Regardless of having to deal with the newbie... Inu Yasha is right, Horus decks DO run most cards that would negate anything that would give your opponent an upperhand. Solemn Judgment, Divine Wrath, Horn of Heaven, etc etc. In a Horus deck, negation is the main focus, and negation is a form of control. So I believe, in essance, that Horus is more control based then any Chaos deck ever will be.
For some reason right now though... my Horus deck is failing miserably against most deck types, but I've yet to face off against a Chaos deck. I'm doing something wrong... I just don't know what yet.

It's funny you shoudl mention this...not too long ago, I dueled someone with my Horus deck who is a VERY good duelist. In the third game, I always seemed to have an answer for every card he played. He even said as much near the end of it, how every time he tried something, I had a counter for it. Horus decks ARE control decks. Horus 6 and 8 between them can eliminate roughly half the cards in a typical deck and make them only useful as bluff trap cards.
I don't have any Royal Decrees, unfortunately, but I'm looking forward to it being a Super Rare in the next reprint set. Until then, 7 tools works decently enough :)

Hmmm...well, what kind of Horus deck do you run? Horus is different than Chaos in that all practically all the monsters in Chaos are light and dark, the same ones most of the time. With Horus, there are only 3 Horus dragons, and most people only run between 5-7 of them total. That means there are 10-13 other monsters in your deck to create the sub-theme. Maybe it's your sub-theme that's the problem.
