I'm running a beast deck, and looking to make it geared towards a Jackal lock. Chiron the Mage is an obvious need for this deck. His effect is like Breakers, except you discard a spell card to destroy one spell or trap on the field. I was looking through and thought of Gather Your Mind. I guess I never really understood it's effect and finally decided to ask on its ruling. Does it activate (so to speak) while in your deck?? It reminds me of Sinister Serpents effect wording.
Gather Your Mind
(Normal Spell)
Add 1 "Gather Your Mind" card from your Deck to your hand. Your Deck is then shuffled. You can only use 1 "Gather Your Mind" per turn.
It doesn't say you have to play one on the field to activate it's effect. It could mean the difference in deck thinning and adding a discardable card to my hand.
Fissure
Group: Spell Card
Type: Spell
Destroy 1 face-up monster with the lowest ATK on your opponent's side of the field.
Oh, look, it doesn't say it has to be played on the field either, so I guess every time I feel like destroying your monster, I'll just wave this card in front of your nose...
Obviously, it doesn't work that way. You play Gather The Mind, its effect activates and allows you to add 1 Gather Your Mind from your deck to your hand. End of story.
I understand Chiron's effect. That wasn't in question. I think Gather your mind is a canidate for card errata. It simply states add 1 Gather Your mind from your deck to your hand, once per turn. It can come across that even if you don't have any in your hand, you can add 1 from your deck.
And again, NO the comparison is not on the money. How to play spell cards is not in question...just the effect of Gather your mind. There are several cards in the game that have exceptional rules to how a typical spell, trap, or monster card is played. E.G. Dark Coffin and Statue of the Wicked....trap cards that activate in the graveyard. Jinzo can't touch them there.
You have to play Gather your mind to get it's effect. Discarding a card for chiron is a cost. They don't work together unless you activate gather your mind, then use the newly acquired gather your mind for chiron. Thinning and a spell card, but the card discarded for chiron can't be an activated card. Similar to Thunder Dragon. You can't play raigeki break discarding thunder dragon and seek 2 more.

Konami and upperdeck and everyone HOPE that people with common sense know they have to actually activate a magic card on the field and hope that people will be able to figure out where and how things activate and errata things if people just DON'T get it (or is just a translation error and such), but in terms of Gather Your Mind, it's a case of common sense. You have to actually play it, saying that you'll activate the effect and take a "Gather your Mind" from your deck.
Well, I must be a total noob worthy of being flamed. And is actually possible that a card could be as retarded as Gather Your mind was actually created. Well I guess I'll just sew my head back on and go my merry way.
It's meant for deck thinning and cards like Royal Magical Library ot the likes of which say each time a spell card is activated put a counter on this card. Gather your mind then allows you to activate a spell card once per turn while still keeping hand count and thins the deck.
I've been playing less than a year and I play non traditional so I have had the question before. I play them in my side deck and sometimes main deck them. It's a valid thought though, but once you hear the explanation it makes a bit more sense.
