The sideboard is a concept most commonly used in tournament Magic games. Since tournaments are best 2 of 3 games (or, occasionally, best 3 of 5), you have the opportunity to utilize your Sideboard to optimize your deck against the other player's deck.
In Constructed formats, your sideboard must be exactly 15 cards, and is registered along with your deck. After the first and second games, you may substitute one card for your sideboard in for one card from you main deck out. After the match, you must reset your deck to its original configuration for the next match.
Common types of Sideboard cards include color hosers or anti-strategy cards. If you know what sort of decks you will be facing, you can design a more effective main deck and sideboard. This is referred to as metagaming.
sideboards are why we always play best out of 3 even for fun games so someone can't build a deck just to hose you, whail on you once and walk away from the table with a smug look on his face.
my red dragon deck has alot of small black and red cards that let me get small things out fast. then i have the dragons for beat down. also burn cards in there.
my blue deck is a counter control deck. with this deck i go through my liberary fast. getting the cards i need. i counter their cards but take there creatues also.
then my shadow deck which is in the deck boards is just a fast asss deck. it can do 20 damage in 7 turns easily, but can also do 20 in 4.
so around here there are alot of blue control/counter/bounce decks and red burn decks.
