Ok, I started playing the AGOT ccg before I had even begun reading the books and I loved the game, now I'm half way through the first book and it is one of the best fantasy novel's I've ever read. So I have to ask: Why isn't there an RPG based on these books?
Has anyone tried adapting a system to use? I wouldn't want to use D20, but that is a personal bias. Ars Magica is the right tech level, but it is way too bent towards wizards and magic use. Any thoughts?
It's a good question, probably one you might want to put to the folks over at Fantasy Flight Games. In the developer's diary, the developer (don't know his name) talks about George Martin being involved with the development of the CCG, or at least having final say on how some cards behave. If Martin is involved with the company in some way, that would seem to mean that getting his input and support for an RPG is doable. And, considering the fact that FFG is primarily an RPG company, I don't see why they wouldn't consider it.
I'd also love to see a board game built around GoT, similar to a military wargame. Because of the lack of magic, it's really a great example of pseudo-historical fiction, which is a market that hasn't been tapped. I was actually working on something similar to that when I started reading the books, and realized that Martin had beat me to the idea!
FFG does have a board game coming out in a few months. The next Dragon magazine also is going to have Westeros as a D&D campaign setting in the next issue.
I thought I heard that the licensing rights had been negotiated for an RPG (it's obvious that he can't have any problems with roleplaying), but I'm not 100% certain. Still the Dragon article should suffice until one is negotiated.
Ok, I got the Dragon issue with the Westeros stuff in it. It wasn't bad, came with a real nice map. It also had an interesting interview with Mr. Martin in which it was reported that a deal for an RPG had been signed with a company and it would likely be released later this year.
Didn't say who the publisher would be, but I'm hoping it is a non-D20 system.
Along those lines I checked out 3 successful universal RPG systems; GURPS, Hero system, and Action. GURPS and Action seem pretty straight forward and I'm leaning towards using one of them. Hero system is huge with a million options which make it both cool and potentially very cumbersome.
I'm not sure if GoT really works as an RPG. If ever there was an environment that DIDN'T emphasize teamwork and working together, it would be GoT. It would really work much better in game environments where the players are antagonistic towards each other. It's more fun to take off your buddy's head than some random NPC!
