Is mono black a tournament worthy deck yet or will it be when the next set is released.Just wondering because I run a mono black deck and am undefeated in my area although there are no tournaments.
It depends not only on the decks build but the player and meta. In my meta money blacks hard to run but if ran effectively smashes just about any deck here.
Mono black is very slow currently, but it is tournament worthy, watch out for rush if you plan using it, since they pretty much dominates most meta right now.
Monored rush isn't too hard to deal with unless they pull out a Valdios. Just chump block them with Marrow Ooze and Squito, then you can easily take control when they are topdecking. Valdios is a pain since you can't really do anything about it until turn 5 with Chaos Worm or with a Terror Pit trigger. You're probably better off using Darkness/Water or Darkness/Fire or the exta early removal and speed.
Mono Black is not tournament worthy IMO because there are not enuff methods of killing opponents shields and defend from attacks. Black is great support but it cannot hang wit blueblack, mono red, red green tournament decks. I have seen the same guy at my local tournament use mono black for like 3 weeks in a row (each time modified a little bit) and he has not made it past round 1.
Mono-Black is on the cusp of being Tier 1. Once it gets another 5 cost Double Breaker, there might be trouble. One of the future sets promotes mono-Civ decks. That is when a Darkness only deck will shine (because there will be cards that give it bonusues for being mono-black).
I agree with GordonKane. Right now, in the hands of the right player, it can do very well. It's on the edge of being tier 1. I have seen this young kid, awesome player, who almost nabbed 1st place with a mono-Darkness deck.
