A few habits, that will always bring more DM players to your local store.
Ok I've seen the "How's your community" thread. It looks sad. So I'm gonna give some tips on getting more people to play DM.
1: Always show up. Wheither it's league night, or a saterday tourney you need to show up to EVERY DM event. Nobody will want to show up if they think that there's only gonna be one or two people there. However if just five people are guarunteed to show up each and EVERY time, then people will make more of an effort to show up. People aren't gonna nag there parents to drive em to the local card shop, if there's only gonna be one or two people there. It's not worth the effort.
2: Treat other card games with respect (even if they give you no respect). When YGO or MTG players say "DM is lame" don't turn around and insult there game back. Instead just start listing reasons why DM is not lame. Don't talk like DM is going to make someone else's game dead. Eventually other CCG players will realize that you are not hostile towards their game. Your humility will cause them to at least try out DM. Then a few players will like it, and decide to play it.
3: Give your extra commons and uncommons to broke kids, and newer players. DM is a game that can be played without any rares. Giving your extra stuff to newer players will help ensure that they stay with the game, instead of quit. Nobody wants to play if they can't make a decent deck. This tip also ties in closely with the first tip.
4: Trade. Even if you're not really getting anything good, it's a nice idea to trade often. Trading a good rare for another good rare, might not make you jump for joy, but it sure does help other players get closer to making that cool deck that they've been dreaming about. Then they can turn around and have fun testing there newer deck out agianst other players. Note, the word "fun" was involved. DM is no fun if you can't use the deck that you wanna use.
5: Play casually. Don't beat the snot out of some new guy, and then act all cocky afterward. All you are doing is making DM unfun for the new player. So you won. Big deal. Don't rub it in. Who wants to play a game that has jerk players, that rub it in your face, when you lose?
6: When giving commons and stuff away to new players always be sure to include this line... "If any of your friend's wanna play I think I can help them build a deck". Of course you only say that when you actually CAN give away more extra commons and uncommons.
7: Trade online. Ok so your local card shop has sold a total of five boxes of DM. One kid has two Natural Snares, but no one else seems to have pulled him. The kid that has Natural Snares won't trade or sell them for anything. In the meantime almost everyone in your area has at least three Dia Norks. You can easily pick up Dia Norks from your area and trade them for better cards on the internet. Then you turn around and trade for more Dia Norks. In the end not everyone has Dia Nork, and other rares are easier to get. Nobody wants to play a game, when everyone has the exact same stuff to trade.
yeh people who are rude to new people will put them off and maybe even stop people from playing. it might get anoying if the kid/bloke asks you about every single card ''what does that do?'' but then again that doesnt bother me overally much as thats part of learning and paret of the game itself !
i totally agree with no. 1. In strike zone, my brother, me, and 3 other friends always show up for our tourny at Strike Zone. However, in L King, no one always comes. It is dowtown and too far way from all of us. Why today, they just canceled thier sunday tourny because of the lack of people. And on friday, they now get 1-6 people every week, instead of their old 4-10. Both are not that great, and the prizes are not that great. Im thinking of stopping to go to L King.
mohamed, you shouldn't stop coming to L King. Mr. King is getting a new kid and his friends and a guy named Clifford and his friends to start coming to the Friday tournament. In the next couple weeks, I expect to see about eight to twelve people show up if you and your brother come.
Back on topic, Knives101, I agree with what you said and I hope it helps make more people want to play DM :)
well i dont see anyone who comes every week like what Knives101 said. And L King is 40 Minutes away, so coming all the way from here to there and being told that there is no tourny or there are very few people playing isnt great news to hear. However, if you can come for sure on friday, and know that others (like 3 or 4) can come, we will be happy to come. We now can only go to one toury per week, so i now have to choose between the 3 tournys i like to go per week. If you are almost sure about the players, tell me, and like i said, we will be happy to come.
You know i really like those habits Knives101. Im gonna print them out and stick them on my TCG bag. They are really what i think everyone should be doing (including me).
Knives hit this right on, it's a formula that helped us revive Pokemon twice around here. You just get a group of 4-6 or so that are dead serious about playing the game, and have them show up every week, and eventually it will grow upon itself. As long as people know that the players are there, they'll show up, but once they lose faith in the turnout, they'll be afraid to commit they're day to it.
Another idea we used is a "Game Day" where you offer small, 8-man dollar tournies for every game, and take one or two people for each game, give them a table, and let them teach new players how thier game works. Game Day's have been a huge success around here, drawing crowds of 50-60 people, and a few are bound to pick up your game.
Tetris I am DBZ CCG Vet (Shh!! Don't tell the mods!!). I changed my SN because I quit DBZ a while back. After being dead for six months over here DBZ has picked up agian. I'll still play, but I won't buy any new cards, for DBZ.
Hydromorph is absolutley right. When you have 4-6 Hardcore players, that show up every league night, then there's about ten to fifteen people that show up because the hardcore gamers show up.
